On behalf of the Executive Committee of the ESA:
Statement
The ESA executive committee has published a statement expressing solidarity with colleagues in Turkey. You might have heard about the disciplinary investigations, threats and prosecution initiated by Turkish authorities against academics who have signed a petition for peace in the Kurdish region.  Many academic associations have already expressed their concern and support for Turkish colleagues; the ESA is committed to contribute to the momentum in this support.
Frank Welz, the ESA president, and Sue Scott, the representative of the National Associations on the Executive, have put together a statement which has been agreed on in the Executive Committee, and sent to the Prime Minister and the Council for Higher Education in Turkey. It is available on the ESA website, http://europeansociology.org/ 469-esa-solidarity-with- colleagues-in-turkey.html. The statement will also be shared with the national associations, and pan-European networks such as the EASSH and ISE.
If you maintain a website, you could also link the statement (in that case, please do inform Ipek Demir (Leicester University) who is coordinating dissemination of the statement,id34@leicester.ac.uk).
You can find the website of the ‘Academics for Peace’ initiative that started the petition herehttp:// barisicinakademisyenler.net/ index.html (mostly in Turkish), it also includes many letters of support (http:// barisicinakademisyenler.net/ haberduyuru.html). The group is also putting together English-language ‘solidarity group reports’ on the current situation, please see attached for their report of 9 February 2016. See also a recent letter from the Middle East Studies Association (MESA) here http://mesana.org/committees/ academic-freedom/intervention/ letters-turkey.html# Turkey20160217 for updates.
