Chapter
This chapter provides information on islands of forests immersed in flood-prone savannah-dominated landscapes for biodiversity conservation and productive activities. Our study area in the Paraguayan Chaco is in a region dedicated to low intensity cattle rearing, with native grasslands as forage within a mosaic of natural plant formations. The regi...

Wetlands are essential habitats for amphibians, but for many species, no information is available regarding how and when they make use of the different environments within the upland-wetland ecotone, nor which variables affect spatial and temporal distribution. We sought to determine the habitat preferences of two tree frog species using a capture-...

The evaluation of the conservation status is a planning tool that allows to take actions for the preservation of these. Paraguay suffers an accelerated loss of habitats, due to the high rate of deforestation due to the land-use change, for which this tool plays a fundamental role in the conservation of biodiversity. Law 96 of 1992, contemplates the...

In this study we assessed the efficacy of Visible Implant Alphanumeric (VIA) for marking adults and juveniles of the Neotropical treefrog Scinax nasicus. We evaluated the success of this technique in the identification of individuals and the prevalence of tags in the field. As a control, we marked the same individuals through toe-clipping. Of 196 m...

Mico melanurus is an endangered primate in Paraguay, with most Paraguayan records in the vicinity of Agua Dulce (Defensores del Chaco National Park). We report the first well-documented locality outside of the Agua Dulce/Linea 1 transect, representing the most northeastern record in Paraguay, as well as a new habitat for the species, transitional P...

Elachistocleis haroi (Anura: Microhylidae) was described from the provinces of Jujuy, Salta and Formosa in Argentina and the Tarija department in Bolivia. Based on specimens housed in the Museo Nacional de Historia Natural del Paraguay and Colección Zoológica de la Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales, we extend the range of the species to the...

Project
Our project focuses on ecosystem restoration of the humid Chaco ecoregion as well as the study of ecosystem services of this diverse landscape mostly consisting of natural occurring wetlands, forests, and savannas. In our study area we are combining livestock production in native grasslands with conservation of biodiversity. Despite extensive livestock production, our study site has not been subject to land cover changes. Another important goal in the long run is to apply new technologies to understand hydrology of this area, which is complicated due to the extremely flat topography. We are currently seeking alternatives to obtain a DEM unaffected by vegetation, specially dense forest patches. www.chacoamericano.org
