Introduction
My PhD project aims to unravel terrestrial ecosystem and climate dynamics in SE Africa during the ‘mid’-Pliocene to early Pleistocene (c. 4 to 2 Ma) through the establishment of a land-sea correlation. Methodologically, the project goal will be reached through the integration of palynological (pollen and spores), element-geochemical (XRF core scanning) and organic biomarker datasets from IODP Site U1478 (Mozambique Channel), off the Limpopo River mouth.

There is growing concern on the survival of Mediterranean forests under the projected near-future droughts as a result of anthropogenic climate change. Here we determine the resilience of Mediterranean forests across the entire range of climatic boundary conditions realized during the past 500 kyrs based on continuous pollen and geochemical records...

The current study presents the preliminary results of a marine geological survey of Myrtoon Basin, on the western part of the Hellenic Volcanic Arc. The processing and interpretation of recently acquired swath bathymetry and seismic data, along with older relevant information, led to the improvement of our knowledge of the geological structure, the...

The Taung child, the holotype of Australopithecus africanus, was discovered in 1924 at the Buxton Limeworks quarry. Ultimate acceptance of the specimen was delayed until the discovery of adult hominins from Sterkfontein and Makapansgat, some 390km and 670km north-east of Taung. The juvenile age of Taung has made (and continues to make) it difficult...
