Using 642 forest plots from three regions in Germany, we analyzed the direct and indirect effects of forest management intensity and of environmental variables on lichen functional diversity (FDis). Environmental stand variables were affected by management intensity and acted as an environmental filter: summing direct and indirect effects resulted...

A new species of Enterographa (Arthoniales: Roccellaceae) is described. E. kinabaluensis from Kota Kinabalu is characterized by the presence of punctiform soralia and norstictic acid. The saxicolous Fulvophyton serusiauxii is described from coastal Mexico and differs from the corticolous F. klementii in having much smaller ascospores.

In 1902, the nationwide citizen science project, known as FLORIVON, for mapping the flora of the Netherlands was launched, resulting in the publication of a complete flora atlas in 1980. Until 2004, the atlas dataset of the fieldwork between 1902 and 1950 had only been partly digitised and observations were aggregated and anonymised. Between 2001 a...

Species distribution data is often collected in local and regional atlas projects, in which data is collected in grid squares to ensure optimal data coverage. Nowadays, many different data sources are available, and atlas projects often start with a large number of observations already being available. We show how existing biodiversity data can be...

In this study, a high-resolution map showing the response of wild plants to climate patterns was created by combining open data from various sources. The first step was to estimate the average temperature in the European distribution of each plant species occurring in the Netherlands. We used GBIF observations (GBIF.org 2017, 70.3M records) and the...

Lichens of Elswout. Elswout is an old estate in the innermost zone of the coastal dunes near Haarlem in the west of the Netherlands. From 1999 onward, it was discovered that Elswout harbours a rich lichen flora, mainly due to the presence of a wide variety of habitats, in which a rich lichen flora could develop during three centuries. A total of 17...

In the Netherlands climate change has a profound effect on the distribution of numerous plant and animal species. However, whether and how different taxonomic groups are able to track climate change is still largely unclear. Following a method developed by Devictor et al (2012) we measure changes in the Community Temperature Index (CTI) over time f...

To study the relation between changes in local plant communities and shifts in temperature, the temperature niches of the species need to be defined. We calculated the Species Temperature Index (STI) as a proxy for this niche. STI is defined as the mean annual temperature within the range of a species. In this paper, a method is described to calcul...

Due to isolation, islands are known to harbor a high number of endemics. Although most lichen species are widespread, a number of genera are well-known for the large number of endemics. Often, those endemic taxa have a low population size and are vulnerable to ecosystem change. We carried out a survey of all seven endemic lichens of the island of P...

Inland drift sands in the Netherlands are an important landscape type within the Dutch nature. They represent an important pioneer habitat which has become rare in European nature. Under current climate and environmental conditions (i.e. high N-deposition) these inland drift sands tend to be rapid colonialized by vegetation and therefor lose their...

The pioneer vegetation of inland dunes is known for its lichen diversity. The development of lichen-rich vegetation may take several decades after the first pioneer stage with Corynephorus canescens and Polytrichum piliferum.
