Despite substantial health benefits, smoking cessation attempts have high relapse rates. Neuroimaging measures can sometimes predict individual differences in substance use phenotypes – including relapse – better than behavioral metrics alone. No study to date has compared the relative prediction ability of changes in psychological processes across...

Background: Research investigating treatments and interventions for cognitive decline fail due to difficulties in accurately recognizing behavioral signatures in the presymptomatic stages of the disease. For this validation study, we took our previously constructed digital biomarker-based prognostic models and focused on generalizability and robus...

Research investigating treatments and interventions for cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease (AD) suffer due to difficulties in accurately identifying individuals at risk of AD in the pre-symptomatic stages of the disease. There is an urgent need for better identification of such individuals in order to enable earlier treatment and to properly...

OBJECTIVE: Altered brain functional connectivity has been shown in youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, relatively little is known about functional connectivity in adult ADHD, and how it is linked with the heritability of ADHD. METHODS: We measured eyes-open and eyes-closed resting electroencephalography (EEG) from 3...

The early identification of cognitive decline is critical for providing an adequate diagnostic and prognostic assessment and for implementing effective interventions. We evaluated ALTOIDA, a 10 min self-administered augmented reality test, that tracks gamified daily routines through motor execution trajectories while navigating an environment.

Background Impulsivity, broadly characterized as the tendency to act prematurely without foresight, is linked to alcohol misuse in college students. However, impulsivity is a multidimensional construct and different subdomains likely underlie different patterns of alcohol misuse. Here, we quantified the association between alcohol intoxication freq...

The current study investigated distinction and hierarchical relations when targeted specifically in a self as context exerci...

Project
Our project investigates the psychological and familial characteristics of ADHD, and the mental health challenges for adults and adolescents with ADHD. My research in this project focuses on identifying a heritability profile of sensory and neurocognitive functions in ADHD. The goal of this research is to improve the diagnosis and management of ADHD in clinical practice. More information: http://www.whelanlabtcd.org/research/attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder/
