Una especie indicadora es un organismo cuya presencia, ausencia o abundancia refleja una condición ambiental específica. Las especies indicadoras pueden ser señal de un cambio en la condición biológica de un ecosistema en particular, y por lo tanto pueden ser utilizadas como un puente para diagnosticar la salud de un ecosistema. Se trata, generalmente, de especies mayores o predadores, quienes se encuentran en el tope de las cadenas alimenticias.
