During the sixth millennium bce, the first farmers of Central Europe rapidly expanded across a varied mosaic of forested environments. Such environments would have offered important sources of mineral-rich animal feed and shelter, prompting the question: to what extent did early farmers exploit forests to raise their herds? Here, to resolve this, w...
Sheep was one of the first domesticated animals in Neolithic West Eurasia. The zooarchaeological record suggests that domestication first took place in Southwest Asia, although much remains unresolved about the precise location(s) and timing(s) of earliest domestication, or the post-domestication history of sheep. Here, we present 24 new partial sh...
The preventive archaeological excavation of Saint-Julien-lès-Metz took place some twenty years ago, and the artefacts were completely restudied following the publication of this relatively well-preserved site. The site as a whole illustrates three Neolithic periods from sometimes unprecedented angles, and represents a major contribution to our unde...
Stable isotope signatures of domesticates found on archaeology sites provide information about past human behaviour, such as the evolution and adaptation of husbandry strategies. A dynamic phase in cattle husbandry evolution is during the 6th millennium BCE, where the first cattle herders of central Europe spread rapidly through diverse forested ec...
The purpose of this article is to present an inventory of certain faunal remains from Linearbandkeramic (LBK) settlements in the Paris Basin (Ile-de-France, Hauts-de-France and Champagne) that seem to belong to a particular category, that of “sign-objects,” in other words, tangible evidence intended to be shown and directly interpretable by an obse...
Building on the experience of twenty-five years of fieldwork and archaeozoological analyses carried out during research projects in various regions of northern France, this book examines animal husbandry and hunting practices over the 5000 year period from the first sedentary groups to the more evolved societies, corresponding to the Neolithic, Bro...
This study investigates the relationship between monumental funerary structures, social organizations, and diets in Middle Neolithic France. Focusing on the Cerny culture based in the Paris Basin region, we analysed and compared bone collagen stable carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur isotope values of 113 individuals from three different types of Cerny c...
Genomic studies conducted on ancient individuals across Europe have revealed how migrations have contributed to its present genetic landscape, but the territory of present-day France has yet to be connected to the broader European picture. We generated a large dataset comprising the complete mitochondrial genomes, Y-chromosome markers, and genotype...
The article provides an account of two large Late Neolithic structures discovered on the site of “La Delle du Poirier” at Saint-André-sur-Orne. This site has also yielded the remains of other structures dating to the Middle Neolithic, the Early Bronze Age (Beaker Period) and the Middle Bronze Age. The two principal Late Neolithic buildings share a...
Thanks to archaeological work undertaken in the Paris Basin (France), a large volume of high quality faunal remains data was obtained from settlement and funerary contexts from the first Neolithic societies, the Linear Pottery Culture "LBK" (sixth millennium BC). It allowed us to carry out extensive analyses: first, we were able to develop a novel...
The site of Conty is located at the bottom of the small side valley of the Selle, a tributary of the River Somme. An area of 2,540 m² has revealed domestic structures, some of which are rich in various kinds of artefacts. The technological and typological characteristics of the pottery can be clearly assigned to the recent phase of the Cerny cultur...
This paper proposes a novel interpretation of Neolithic Linear Pottery (LBK) settlement organisation, based on comparative analysis of data on subsistence (faunal remains, macrolithic tools) and on pottery manufacturing techniques and apprenticeship networks in the settlement of Cuiry-lès-Chaudardes (Aisne, France). This new model explains differen...
Articles about Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age sites in northern France from several researchers.
This article presents the results of excavation in 2007 and 2009 of an early Neolithic settlement located on the alluvial plain of the river Aisne at Vénizel " Le Creulet" (Picardy, France). The discovery of this site provides additional evidence for a dense pattern of early Neolithic settlement in the part of the Aisne valley between Soissons and...
A combined analysis of faunal remains and macrolithic tools, reflecting meat and plant food consumption, was conducted on six multi-phase settlements in the Aisne valley (Picardy, France), dating to the late Linearbandkeramik (LBK). A new socio-economic model is proposed. A study of the house plans, phase and position in the settlements leads to di...
Husbandry, hunting and agriculture are keys to understand economic and ideological aspects of the first Neolithic societies. A combined analysis of animal remains and macrolithic tools, reflecting meat and plant food consumption was conducted on six multi-phase settlements in the Aisne valley (Picardy, France), dating to the Paris basin late Lbk. T...
This paper relates to the two only pits attributed to the SOM culture discovered on the Cuiry-lès-Chaudardes site. The pits contained domestic material typical of a settlement. They appear however not to be contemporary as there are notable différences in the pottery morphologies and the supply of flint raw materials.
As part of long-term research into the Neolithic of the river Aisne valley, a new project was undertaken between 2007 and 2010, the broad objective of which was to exploit the large dataset from 15 excavated LBK settlements to produce an overview of economic and social organisation. A major issue addressed was the definition of the domestic unit an...
The aim of this article is to establish distinctions between domestic and wild species (bovines and aurochs) and their gender, on the basis of faunal remains recovered from a number of early Neolithic sites in the Paris Basin. The measurements are made on fused bones following the traditional method. We have been able to separate groups of animals...
The largest faunal samples in temperate Europe for the Linearbandkeramik culture (5500-4900 cal. BC) and later Danubian groups like Blicquy/Villeneuve-Saint-Germain (4900-4600 cal. BC) come from the Paris basin. Over 200 000 bone fragments have been recovered here, compared to 100 000 from the rest of Europe. The aim of this article is to bring tog...
From numerous archaeozoological studies done the last fifteen years, we propose to discuss the evolution of aurochs and domestic cattle in a chronological sequence wich continues from the early Neolithic to the late Iron Age. This study is taking place in a homogeneous geographic territory in Picardy, two valleys close to each other, the Aisne vall...
The village of Tinqueux is located in the outskirts of Reims in the Marne is dated to the Neolithic period VSG. It is situated on a hillock. Five houses with lateral pits, 14 isolated pits and a combustion structure were discovered over an area of one hectare. Two habitat phases were determined on a stratigraphic basis, namely the intersection of t...
A comprehensive study has been conducted on the integration of wild animal in the economic and social system Linearbandkeramik, thanks to the contribution of archaeozoological data in the Aisne valley (France). The study of these numerous bone remains (more than 50 000 number of remains) can address important issues such as animal domestication, bu...
The careful study of faunal and artefact remains associated with Bandkeramik houses in France has shown new details about activity zones and village organization in the Early Neolithic. Lamys Hachem describes the result of work from Cuiry-lès-Chaudardes in the Aisne valley, France.
Several human and animal squeletons were found deposited in the Lbk ceremonial enclosure of Menneville "Derrière le Village" (Aisne, France).
The object of this article is to study the Maizy site (Aisne) with a view to characterising the fauna of the Michelsberg culture. This fauna is unknown in the Picardie region. A second objective is to contribute to the general issue of the Early Chalcolithic period. Further, the specific characteristics of the faunal remains according to various ty...
