Understanding the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors in disease etiology and the role of gene-environment interactions (GEIs) across human development stages is important. We review the state of GEI research, including challenges in measuring environmental factors and advantages of GEI analysis in understanding disease mechanism...
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) introduces a new translational research framework that builds upon previous biomedical models to create a more comprehensive and integrated environmental health paradigm. The framework was developed as a graphical construct that illustrates the complexity of designing, implementing, an...
Environmental health researchers, government agencies, and community groups have endorsed long-term community–academic partnerships as an effective strategy to support science-based improvements in environmental health. Social sciences concepts, approaches, and methods are fundamental to these translational partnerships. However, appropriate roles...
As federal programs are held more accountable for their research investments, The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) has developed a new method to quantify the impact of our funded research on the scientific and broader communities. In this article we review traditional bibliometric analyses, address challenges associated w...
The purpose of this paper is to highlight the three articles included in a special focus of Drugs: Education, Prevention, and Policy that address environmental change strategies targeting drug abuse prevention. We define environmental change strategies and their effectiveness in public health domains such as alcohol abuse, smoking, and obesity. We...
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences' (NIEHS) Partnerships for Environmental Public Health (PEPH) program created the Evaluation Metrics Manual as a tool to help grantees understand how to map out their programs using a logic model, and to identify measures for documenting their achievements in environmental public health researc...
Evaluators of scientific research programs have several tools to document and analyze products of scientific research, but few tools exist for exploring and capturing the impacts of such research. Understanding impacts is beneficial because it fosters a greater sense of accountability and stewardship for federal research dollars. This article prese...
In this introductory article we define environmental change strategies (ECS), summarize the primary challenges associated with evaluating ECS, and provide an overview of the methods researchers have employed to begin to address these challenges. This special issue provides a range of examples, from researchers and practitioners in the field, of dif...
The Partnerships for Environmental Public Health (PEPH) is one of the signature programs of the National Institute of Environmental Health Science's (NIEHS) Division of Extramural Research and Training (DERT). The lack of standardized evaluation tools and metrics is one of the biggest challenges reported by grantees in implementing community-based...
Grantees funded through the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant initiative (SPF SIG) by SAMHSA's Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) were encouraged to implement environmental change strategies--population-based interventions that aim to change the environment or context in which individuals make decisions about using alco...
Although coalitions are a popular strategy for addressing substance abuse problems (Downey, Ireson, Slavova, McKee, 2008; Zakocs & Edwards, 2006; Roussos & Fawcett, 2000), research on their effectiveness at changing health indicators is limited and results have been mixed (Green and Kreuter, 2002; Flewelling et al., 2005). This research examines th...
Through discussions of our experiences and minimal lecture, we will explore the various challenges associated with evaluating public health policy, such as the availability of appropriate data to measure outcomes, determining timeframes for measuring change in outcomes, attributing policy to changes in outcomes, and addressing the influence of cont...
In order to effectively evaluate public health policy, we will identify and discuss appropriate methodological tools. During this session will explore potential solutions to the challenges of evaluating public health policy. Participants will work in groups to review case studies from peer-reviewed literature of public health policy evaluation and...
This 3-hour course will provide participants with an opportunity to explore challenges related to evaluating public health policy and identify solutions for addressing those challenges.
BACKGROUND: Recovery from substance abuse (SA) depends, in part, on completion of recommended treatment. This study assesses differences in rates and correlates of treatment completion (TC) among adolescents admitted to publicly funded SA programs.
METHODS: We used admission and discharge linked data from Treatment Episodes Data Set(2001-2004). A...
Background: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) has funded Injury Control Research Centers (ICRC) since 1987. In 2008, NCIPC began a program evaluation of the ICRCs to describe the contributions of the ICRC program to building and sustaining the field of injury prevention...
This poster session will showcase the successes and challenges associated with using a web-based survey to collect data from community grantees participating in CSAP’s Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF SIG) initiative. The SPF is a framework that communities must follow to address substance abuse prevention and includes five...
