Today, anthropic morphologies in river deltas are widespread. The natural morpho-dynamics interact with engineered structures or urbanisation and shape hybrid features not grasped in traditional natural classifications of deltas. However, it is challenging to reconstruct the trajectory of the shifting balance between the natural and the anthropogen...
Although the Nile is one of the largest rivers in the world and played a central role in ancient Egyptian life, little is known about its response to climatic change during the Holocene. Here we present a framework for the evolution of the Egyptian Nile, demonstrating how climatic and environmental changes have shaped the landscape of the Egyptian...
The reconstruction of the human impacts on the morphodynamics of river deltas in the long term is challenging. The ternary diagram of Galloway (1975) used to classify morphodynamics of deltas does not include direct human influence which is now affecting most of the deltas of the world. The study of human-dominated deltas requires specific approach...
The modern Tiber delta includes two river mouths flowing into the Tyrrhenian sea, the Fiumara to the South and the Fiumicino to the North. While the Fiumara is a natural channel, the Fiumicino is a canal that was excavated during the Roman period. Two major Roman archaeological sites are associated with these two watercourses: Ostia, founded betwee...
On an island in Lake Manzala in the north-east corner of the Nile Delta lie the ruins of the once-prosperous late Roman and medieval port and manufacturing centre of Tell Tinnīs. Although little can be seen above ground, beneath the surface lie archaeological deposits that can be accessed by geophysical and geoarchaeological survey, and remote sens...

This is the final report of the geophysical survey of the Isola Sacra conducted by the Portus Project between 2007 and 2012
As part of the 2010 and 2012 field seasons at the site of Çatalhöyük, geophysical survey was conducted with the aim of mapping parts of the subsurface remains at the site. While extensive excavations have been conducted on the East Mound, a considerable part of the area of this mound is still largely unknown in terms of the presence of archaeologic...

The delta and lower valley of the Tiber in central Italy represents a wetland landscape and its environs indicating complexity in its geomorphological formation and pattern of settlement. However, the nature of the area, and the diverse origins of data for the archaeological record of the landscape, means that a comprehensive heuristic study of the...
New Kingdom royal cult temples in Thebes (Luxor, Egypt) are all located on the lower desert edge. Kom el-Hettân (Amenhotep III: reign 1391-1353 BCE, 18th Dynasty) is an exception, as it is located in the present Nile floodplain. Its anomalous position has puzzled Egyptologists, as has the termination of its use, which traditionally has been attribu...
This paper presents the results of project work at the Claudian basin at Portus. This major element of infrastructure was established by Claudius by c. AD 46. Excavations undertaken during the construction of the Aeroporto Internazionale di Leonardo da Vinci in the 1960s (Testaguzza 1970) revealed eastern stretches of the northern mole, while more...
The Avebury henge is one of the famous megalithic monuments of the European Neolithic, yet much remains unknown about the detail and chronology of its construction. Here, the results of a new geophysical survey and re-examination of earlier excavation records illuminate the earliest beginnings of the monument. The authors suggest that Avebury's Sou...
This report presents the results of the geophysical survey undertaken at Old Sarum, near Salisbury in Wiltshire, between March 2016 and July 2017. It specifies the survey methodology together with an interpretation discussion of the survey results. This article is a preliminary statement about the discoveries that have been made in the course of the geophysical survey of the Isola Sacra by the Portus Project in collaboration with the SS-Col since 2006. The work has made an important contribution to our understanding of the topography of the island with the discovery of many new sites, togethe...
A remarkable stela from Montoro, southern Spain is unique in its morphology, epigraphic traits, and landscape context. A programme of chemical characterisation, digital imaging, and geo-lithological and epigraphic analyses was conducted to determine its age and significance, and results integrated with data from archaeological investigations of the...
In the Theban area around modern Luxor (Egypt), the River Nile divides the temple complexes of Karnak and Luxor from New Kingdom royal cult temples on the western desert edge. Few sites have been archaeologically identified in the western flood plain, despite its presumed pivotal role in the ancient ritual landscape as the territory that both physi...
Report on the 2016 spring season of the Theban Harbours and Waterscapes Survey (THaWS). The article discusses the geoarchaeological and geophysical survey along a 3.2 km-long transect starting close to the front of the Temple of Millions of Years of Ay and Horemheb and stretching to the village of Geziret el-Bairat on the West Bank of the Nile.
The Roman canal, which was found using magnetometer survey in Isola Sacra (Tiber delta, Italy) in 2009 is fundamental to our understanding of the relationship between Portus and Ostia, which constitute the core of what has been defined as the « port system » of Imperial Rome. This article presents the preliminary results of a stratigraphical study...
Piedras Blancas I is part of the La Peña de los Enamorados archaeological complex (Antequera, Málaga). This complex presents evidence dating from the Neolithic period to the 20th century AD. Research carried out in 2006 suggested that the northern sector of La Peña de los Enamorados had known significant activity between the Late Neolithic and Copp...
