Ongoing International Survey Currently, in a joint effort between the University of Antwerp (Belgium) and Northern Illinois University (USA) we are conducting a study to explore how nationality and culture impact BDSM fantasies and activities, and how BDSM interests are related to other types of sexual fantasies. The study has been approved by the Fetlife Caretakers. Main Research Goal The main goal of this research line is to disentangle biological and psychosocial factors driving an interest in BDSM as well as the actual BDSM experience. In our view, BDSM is an umbrella term encompassing a wide range of interests and activities that may vary both in nature of the interest as well as in its intensity. It refers to a physical, psychological and sexual role-play involving power exchange between consensual participants, but which of these aspects are paramount may vary from person to person. It may primarily be a psychological experience for, for others the physical or sexual aspect may be paramount. For some, it is a crucial part of their (sexual) identity and is interwoven with many aspects of their lives, while for others, it may be an occasional form of leisure. In a series of research project, anchored to three ongoing PhD trajectories, we aim to define the psychological driving mechanisms: How prevalent is interest in BDSM in the Flemisch community? To what extent these interests are driven by past lifetime experiences, by parenting styles in the family of origin, by personality traits. Is it an intrinsic nature for some, or is it a passing interest driven by thrill-seeking behavior? Can differences be seen in people who identify as a Dominant, a submissive or a switch? In the first biological BDSM research project worldwide, we also aimed to identify hormones and other biomarkers driving BDSM interaction. To what extent will BDSM play influence blood based markers for stress, pleasure, sexuality and attachment in Doms and subs?
