While the direct effects of the pandemic are well documented, less is known about the indirect ones, including changes in healthcare provision or human behavior. This paper aims to study the impact of indirect consequences on mortality, focusing on two leading causes (cardiovascular diseases, COVID-19) and places of death in Czechia, during the COV...
Background:
The current ACC/AHA guidelines on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) caution that alcohol septal ablation (ASA) might be less effective in patients with left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO) ≥100 mmHg.
Methods:
We used a multinational registry to evaluate the outcome of ASA patients according to baseline LVOTO.
Results:...
When evaluating vaccine efficacy, the conventional measures include reduction of risk of hospitalization and death. The number of patients dying with or without vaccination is often in the public spotlight. However, when evaluating public health interventions or the burden of disease, it is more illustrative to use mortality metrics taking into acc...
The chapter focuses on civil servants in the position of heads of district authorities, called district captains (Bezirkshauptmann) who held their office in Bohemia in 1875 and 1910. Its aim is to compare individuals from both cohorts and verify whether their social background (both their father's and father-in-law's social position) or nationality...
This study aimed to derive a new score, the Alcohol Septal Ablation-Sudden Cardiac ARREst (ASA-SCARRE) risk score, that can be easily used to evaluate the risk of sudden cardiac arrest events (sudden cardiac death, resuscitation, or appropriate implantable cardioverter-defibrillator discharge) after alcohol septal ablation (ASA) in patients with hy...
This chapter is devoted to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in time and space in Czechia and in a brief context of its neighboring countries. It is (except for the theoretical background and data description) thematically divided into three parts and uses different approaches in the analysis. The first part descriptively outlines the trajectories...
Background
Atrioventricular block is a frequent major complication after alcohol septal ablation (ASA).
Objectives
The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of patients with implanted permanent pacemaker (PPM) related to a high-grade atrioventricular block after ASA for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy.
Methods
We used a multinati...
Background and purpose:
Carotid artery near-occlusion is a type of severe stenosis with complete or partial distal luminal collapse and intracranial collaterals. This study aimed to compare 30-day outcomes and 10-year survival in patients undergoing carotid artery stenting for near-occlusion with a control group of patients with severe stenosis....
Aims
Over a million confirmed cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) across 16 European countries were observed during the first wave of the pandemic. Epidemiological measures like the case fatality rate (CFR) are generally used to determine the severity of the illness. The aim is to investigate the impact of the age structure of reported case...
Pandemie covidu-19 přinesla mnoho nových aspektů a témat vědeckého výzkumu.
The study focuses on the statistical evaluation of data on crime in 1882-1911 published in contemporary records. Firstly, a descriptive analysis is used to compare selected characteristics of persons condemned to death. Secondly , a multinomial logistic regression model is used to identify and statistically test factors determining whether a felon...
In the Czech Republic, there the transversal annual life tables are published only from 1920. Despite the fact that quality of statistics and data in the previous period was sufficient enough, the usually published analyses were based mostly on the crude rates only (with the exception of years around population censuses where also life tables were...
In modern societies, education is one of the key factors for individuals; it is related to personal successes in the labor market, in salary, in health, and in well-being). Education is also very important for society itself, in terms of social cohesion, innovation, racial and religious tolerance, and so on. Human capital as the most important prer...
The COVID-19 Pandemic has become an object of many studies and research papers. Although knowledge of the demographic features of the illness could be important for targeting the prevention, or treatment and evaluation, of the situation, demographic research was rather limited in the initial phases of the pandemic. This paper aims to present the ba...
The article further develops the term ‘high infant mortality trap’ as an expression of the concept supposing a mutual relationship between short average birth intervals (corresponding usually to high fertility) and high level of infant mortality. This mutual relationship is among other a consequence of the effect of the same or similar factors stan...
Demography is currently one of the most rapidly developing fields of study, its topics involve contemporary trends of population development in the World, changes in the age structure (and other socio-economic structures) of the population, changes in the intensity of population processes (mortality, fertility, migration, natality etc.) and many ot...
Knowledge of the length of birth intervals in the past and factors influencing them could help us to reveal many aspects of reproductive behavior at that time. The aim of this article is to describe the reproductive behavior in families from Jablonec (Czech lands) before the onset of the fertility transition using survival analysis and Cox regressi...
This chapter summarizes and describes the chronological development of the demographic grid (known as the Lexis diagram). When the order of the presented versions of the diagram is not strictly chronological, the reason is for better context or possibility of direct comparison. All the introduced versions of the diagram are described and graphicall...
Although the life table is one of the most traditional tools in demography, as its description could be found in many textbooks or basic literature, it is worth mentioning the tool briefly in this book. This is in order to make a clear distinction of exact ages and completed ages, for as we know from our teaching practice, these distinctions are no...
In demography, three time dimensions could be distinguished: calendar time of observation or at the event (period), age (or time duration), and cohort (calendar time at birth or at the initial event in the study). All these time dimensions are tied together. Although the issue of time dimensions or age in demography may seem simple and clear, often...
In 2014, we commemorated the 100th anniversary of Wilhelm Lexis’ death. He contributed significantly to science not only by his research but also by his guidance of the European research institutions.
This chapter briefly introduces Wilhelm Lexis’ biography by focusing on his childhood, studies, and work life. Places relevant to him as well as his working positions and publications are also listed and described.
As it is clear from the previous parts of the book, the demographic grid, or Lexis diagram, plays a crucial role in the demographic analysis. It is the basic tool for identifying the data structure, for properly calculating age-specific mortality rates, and probabilities of dying, it could help to visualize the data as well as develop new analytica...
This book explores the life of economist and social scientist Wilhelm Lexis and the key demographic instrument named after him: the Lexis diagram. It describes this vital tool, which helps demographers visualize data, and examines its various forms through a specially designed example. As a result, readers get to see the Lexis diagram in practice a...
Convergence analysis represents a distinct stream of research in demography and its findings have both theoretical and practical implications. This article focuses on an analysis of mortality convergence of Czech districts over the years between 1991 and 2015. Selected methods that can be used in this kind of analysis are introduced. The results ma...
In Europe, a steady mortality decline has been observed from the 1950s, however, Central and Eastern Europe underwent a period of stagnation or even worsening from the 1960s to 1980s. Since that time an evident mortality decline could be observed in that part of Europe too. Within the post-communist countries, mortality development has been most fa...
Historical demography undergoes nowadays a notable development of methods as well as studied issues - not only in the world but also in the Czech environment. The article describes briefly the development of historical demography in the Czech Republic and also in the world. However, rather than on the past development and classical approaches to th...
The chapter examines the impact of supranational organizations on policymaking in the Czech Republic. The question to be answered is to what extent are national policy formulations influenced by international and national expertise – in the context of the direct influence of supranational organizations on national public policy making. We present t...

Analysis of birth intervals is a traditional part of historical demographic studies. However, these analyses are
usually only simple and descriptive because of the high demands on data and labour such analysis requires.
This study draws on a relatively large dataset including more than 2,000 families from Jablonec nad Nisou from the 17th to 19th ce...
Study of convergence and divergence tendencies could be taken almost as a separate field of study e.g. in demography or geography. In the article, a transparent method of quantification and visualization of convergence tendencies is introduced. Czechia was selected as a case country on which convergence tendencies can be studied and illustrated. Th...

The study presents the possibilities of application of the survival analysis method, commonly used for the data acquired by modern statistics, upon the historical individual data acquired through excerption of names from church registers. Through the analysis of selected characteristics of marriage cohorts of the 18 th century in Jablonec nad Nisou...
This paper provides a brief introduction to Wilhelm Lexis, his life, and the basic demographic tool that
is named after him: the Lexis diagram. This topic is chosen to commemorate the centenary of the death
of Wilhelm Lexis, who had an unquestionable influence on demographic research. The Lexis diagram, which
is used to display demographic events i...

One of the aims of the Education and Training 2020 strategy is to reach 40 % of population with tertiary education attainment. Especially in the European post-communist countries the development of the tertiary education sector has...
Traditional missing data techniques of imputation schemes focus on prediction of the missing value based on other observed values. In the case of continuous missing data the imputation of missing values often focuses on regression models. In the case of categorical data, usual techniques are then focused on classifi cation techniques which sets the...
The article focuses on forecasting the number and size of selected housekeeping households in the Czech Republic for the period 2013-2040. The main data sources are the 2011 Population and Housing Census and the official Population Projection to 2100 issued by the Czech Statistical Office in 2013. Given that the last census switched methodology fro...
The aim of the article is the basic mortality analysis of persons aged 60 and more years with the focus on the cohort perspective. For the comparison the Czech Republic and France were selected. Because of the data availability the analysis covered cohorts 1890–1910 where for each of the two countries it was possible to use data only from one parti...
