Lithostratigraphic redefinition and subdivision of the Sulzheim Formation
(Oligocene; Mainz Basin, SW Germany)
Recently, new formations have been extracted out of the defined Sulzheim Formation (Oligocene, Mainz Basin). Additionally, an interdisciplinary research project led to the (re-)definition of several lithostratigraphic beds. To clarify the...

The regional and stratigraphic subdivision of the Tertiary as part of the Stratigraphic Table of Germany 2016 (STD 2016) is summarised. Primarily, changes compared to STD 2002 are commented. Concerning more detailed explanations, the reader is referred to the respective literature and corresponding definitions in LithoLex (https://litholex.bgr.de)....
The paleontological collections of the Institute of Geosciences, University of Mainz, have been established in 1946/47. Today, they contain more than 33,000 specimens ranging from vertebrate fossils and recent osteological material to invertebrates as well as fossils from some well-known sites. The material is used for research as well as documenta...
The Oligocene was a period of profound climatic and biotic changes, coinciding with a shift from a mostly ice-free warmhouse world at the Eocene-Oligocene boundary to a globally cooler, more seasonal climate. The Rauenberg locality (Baden-Württemberg, Germany) is one of the most significant early Oligocene fossil assemblages in Europe, containing b...

Microfossil and stable isotope data (δ13C, δ18O) from deep-water sediments of Late Miocene age in the Mediterranean region have revealed a stepwise restriction of the Mediterranean prior to the Messinian Salinity Crisis which was modulated by a cyclicity responding to orbital precession. Very little is known with regard to the effects of these chan...
Professor Jean-Pierre Berger joined the Fribourg University (Switzerland) in 1989 as a lecturer (chargé de cours), quickly rising to the rank of head assistant with a postdoctoral lecture qualification in 1992, and becoming Associate Professor for palaeontology in 1997. Fribourg, Lausanne, Tübingen and Munich were important places in his profession...

Der Begriff Mainzer Becken wurde erstmals von Bronn (1837) benutzt. In späteren Jahren benutzten
Lepsius (1883), Mordziol (1911a, b), Wenz (1921a), Sandberger (1853, 1863) und Steuer (1910) den Begriff
Mainzer Becken für ein unterschiedlich begrenztes Gebiet. Erst mit Golwer (1968) und Rothausen & Sonne
(1984 etc.) setzte sich die heute benutzte Be...
Microfossil and stable isotope data from deep-water sediments of Late Miocene age in the Mediterranean region have revealed a stepwise restriction of the Mediterranean prior to the Messinian crisis modulated by cyclical changes in palaeoevironments responding to orbital precession. The understanding of these changes, however, remains semi-quantitat...
In this paper we report the discovery of Foraminifera in Rotliegend-sediments from the Sprendlingen Horst (Germany). The occurence of these Fusulinacea within an intracontinental playa lake is of autochthonous nature. Probably, they had been
transported from marginal areas of the Palaeotethys areas to terrestrial lakes by insects.
Results of systematic excavations at one of the classic localities for marine tertiary
fossils of the Mainz Basin are presented. Foraminiferes, molluscs, ostracods, fish, and mammals are described in detail. Other faunal components are just listed briefly. For the first time fossil finds be set in a paleoecological context. Water depths of est. 7 m...

An outcrop of the Bodenheim- and Stadecken-Formation (Rupelian, Oligocene) was studied sedimentologically and biostratigraphically in the clay pit Jungk near Wöllstein regarding foraminifers, dinocysts and calcareous nannoplankton. A coarsening- and shallowing-upward sequence was identified. Sedimentation started with pelitic sediments, deposited b...
The Tertiary sediments of the Mainz basin are briefly described. Their stratigraphic position and the biostratigraphic correlations are mentioned. Statements about the facies are listed where possible.
In
dem Profil ist eine Coarsening-upward bzw. Shallowing-upward Sequenz erkennbar, die mit pelitischen Abl...

Field trips to outcr...
We present a general stratigraphic synthesis for the Upper Rhine Graben (URG) and the Swiss Molasse Basin (SMB) from Eocene to Pliocene times. The stratigraphic data were compiled both from literature and from research carried out by the authors during the past 6years ; an index of the stratigraphically most important localitites is provided. We di...
Twenty paleogeographic maps are presented for Middle Eocene (Lutetian) to Late Pliocene times according to the stratigraphical data given in the companion paper by Berger et al. this volume. Following a first lacustrine-continental sedimentation during the Middle Eocene, two and locally three Rupelian transgressive events were identified with the f...

The foraminiferal zonation reported here is valid for the marine Oligocene deposits in the Mainz Basin. Thirteen zones and one subzone are defined in the basin facies, which may be correlated biostratigraphically with the current nannoplankton zones and also lithostratigraphically. The zonation for the beach facies, already described by the present...
Studies on the foraminiferal fauna of five Rupelian sections in the Bavarian Molasse and in the Inntaltertiär and also on material housed in the collection of the Bavarian Staatssammlung were made. The foraminiferal fauna was compared to those of the Mainz Basin and Upper Rhine Graben. Apart from the occurrence of endemic and cosmopolitan foraminif...
A 13 m thick section of the Rupelian ”Fischschiefer” was examined in a clay pit near Rauenberg (Upper Rhinegraben). The section exposes interbedded clays and silts with a basal concretionary limestone bed, some pyritic layers and numerous white laminae of calcareous nannoplankton-foraminiferal concentrations. The sediments contain many phosphatic f...

The origin of the stratigraphic division of the Mainz Basin used presently is based on investigations of the 19 th century. The division is a lithostratigraphic subdivision in parts and a biostratigraphic subdivision in other parts. Due to the micropaleontology, lithologic monotonous units were biostratigraphically divided and even mapped with grea...

Close spaced sampling of 5 clay quarries in the Rupel area of Belgium and of 8 outcrop and 40 borehole sections in the Mainz Basin has led to an almost continuous foraminiferal record throughout the Middle Rupelian of the southern North Sea Basin. The distribution of foraminifera in the Boom Clay Formation is rather complex and directly related to...
In agreement with STEININGER & PILLER (1999) and the International Stratigraphic Guide (SALVADOR 1994) the following new lithostratigraphic divisions were introduced in the Mainz Basin: Alzey-Fm., Bodenheim-Fm. (Hochberg- and Rosenberg-Member), Stadecken-Fm. (Elsheim-Mbr.; Pfadberg-Mbr. with Albig-Bed), Sulzheim-Fm. (Schildberg-Mbr. with Kirchberg-...

A 7.2 m thick fossiliferous section of oligocene coastal sands was examined in a sand pit near Siefersheim (Mainz Basin, Germany). The sedimentology, the microfacies, the fabrics of carbonate cements and the fossil record suggest a sedimentation on a steep sub- to intertidal gravel- or sandbeach. So on the one hand vadose Mg-calcitic beachrock ceme...

The Lower Rupelian Clay and the Lower Meeressand of the Mainz Basin are subdivided using foraminifera. Based on this subdivision, the coastal facies, the Lower Meeressand, is correlated with the basin facies of the Rupelian Clay in the Mainz Basin.
The tintinnid Pseudarcella rhumbleri Spandel, 1909 from the Rupelian (Oligocene) of the Mainz Basin, is rediscribed based on a neotype. Even though TAPPAN & LOEBLICH showed as early as 1968 that Pseudarcella is a tintinnid, more recent works of the Mainz Basin have still refered to it as being a foraminifera.
Valves of 20 Oligocene pelecypods from the Mainz Basin and 14 recent valves were examined for growth patterns. Whereas the microgrowth increments of the Rupelian samples indicate fortnightly tidal intervals, the Chattian specimens show annual (seasonal) variations in growth.
Specimens of Discorbinoides patelliformis (BRADY, 1884) are frequently fused at their apertural openings. This species is briefly described and the origin of this phenomenon is discussed.
Hollow ~200 μm diameter spheres have been frequently found in the Rupelian 'Fischschiefer' of the Mainz Basin. Spandel (1909) first described them as Orbulina bituminosa and interpreted them as foraminifera. The prefered interpretation of the spheres is that they are crustacean eggs because of similarities both in terms of size and internal structu...
The wall structure of some foraminifers from the Rupeliam of the Mainz Basin, formerly referred toSpiroplectammina Cushman 1927, is examined. They are classified asSpiroplectinella Kisel’man 1972 because of the occurrence of pseudopores. The genus neither belong to the Spiroplectamminacea nor to the Textulariacea.
The proposition of Hottinger et al...
Based on six specially chosen drillings in two different areas in the Mainz Basin the Fischschiefer has been biostratigraphically explored. The whole fauna and the richness of the species regarding foraminifers show a bisection in a lower part with many species and
a higher part with only a few of them. After detailed examination of the foraminfers...
