Among White1 licensed psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, and counselors, research has documented a severe lack of awareness of unconscious stereotyping, systemic racism, white privilege, and white racial identity. This article introduces a privilege awareness pedagogical model as a framework for White students in clinica...
Lack of training regarding transgender youth leaves K–12 educators unprepared to become allies to this disenfranchised community and attend to their needs. This article explores the pedagogical strategies of two professional workshop models (GLSEN Houston training and the Gender Infinity practitioner training), which provide skills and resources fo...
This study describes White women preservice teachers’ talk in and about an antiracist teacher education course aimed at raising students’ awareness of racial inequities. Recent curricular developments emphasising coverage of sexuality resulted in the creation of psychology courses devoted to ‘lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender’ (LGBT) content that parallel diversity courses that focus on gender or race. However, an intersectional pedagogical approach may strengthen student understanding of not only the LGBT psy...
Diversity courses in higher education often seek to deepen understanding of the systematic advantages associated with dominant group membership, such as white privilege. Most pedagogical studies of privilege awareness examine the impact of full-length diversity courses on white privilege awareness (Case, 2007; Kernahan & Davis, 2009; Lawrence & Bun...

Patricia Hill Collins (1986) labels herself as an ‘outsider within’ due to her intersectional standpoint as a Black woman sociology professor in the ivory tower. In contrast to the ‘outsider within’ lens, I theorize my own social location as an ‘insider without’ due to a complex matrix of identities within the class...

Gender‐focused college courses seek to increase understanding of the systematic advantages associated with dominant group membership. Inclusion of privilege content within gender‐focused courses has increased, but research to test interventions to incr...
Invisible knowledge or the hidden curriculum, the informal education some students get from faculty mentors, is a privilege not afforded to all students. Many universities have instituted psychology careers courses to assist undergraduate psychology students with academic and career advisement. Designed to share this invisible curriculum with all p...

This invisibility of transgender people within psychology courses allows for perpetuation of myth...
