飛騨外縁帯の九頭竜地域を構成する地質単元の境界は, 大部分剪断帯であることが構造地質学的調査によって判明した. これらの剪断帯のうち, 少なくとも4条は, 右横ずれ成分をもつ脆性—延性剪断帯であり, 飛騨外縁帯南縁部を画する脆性剪断帯は, 左横ずれ成分をもつ. 右横ずれ剪断帯は, 前期ジュラ紀の花崗岩礫を有する本戸層に変形を与えるが, 前期白亜紀の手取層群に変形を与えない. 一方, 左横ずれ剪断帯は前期白亜紀の手取層群を切る. したがって, 右横ずれ剪断帯は前期ジュラ紀~前期白亜紀に活動し, 左横ずれ剪断帯は白亜紀に活動したと解釈した.
