The technology use of older people is marked by stigmas. Whether in literature, films or even in science, the narrative of older people who cannot manage the simplest clicks and handles is omnipresent. Independent information search? Unrealistic - children and grandchildren are rather called for help. What if they no longer have a landline but only...

Demographic change in Germany has been discussed on a grand scale in the past years. Feared and denied at first; research was conducted; approaches were presented, and measures derived. The health care sector is an area of special interest because demographic change is affecting it twice: on the one hand, more elderly patients have to be treated wh...

The Aachen method for the identification, classification, and risk analysis of innovation-based problems (AMICAI) was employed with relevant stakeholders in order to identify and analyze ethical, legal and social aspects (ELSA) related to the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the German forestry sector. Based on the problem...

In healthcare, clinical activities are increasingly being relocated to patients’ home environment. Patients can thus continue their therapy in a self-determined manner at home. This trend challenges usability evaluations of medical devices, as patients represent a more heterogeneous user group in terms of experience and training than medical profes...

The integration of ethics into the day-to-day work of research and innovation (R&I) is an important but difficult challenge. However, with the Aachen method for identification, classification and risk analysis of innovation-based problems (AMICAI) an approach from an engineering perspective is presented that enables the integration of ethical, lega...

Dementia is a large economic, social and health concern with the aging population. One of the best ways to care for people living with dementia is to keep them at home in a familiar environment. Smartphone applications may provide assistance to patients and caregivers. An open web-based survey was answered by 104 individuals older than 50 years. Pa...

Background: In many countries, including Germany, older people are increasing in numbers, while fewer caregivers are available. A way to address the problem is to develop new medical assistance and monitoring systems that are operated by the elderly on their own, e.g. in-home aftercare systems. Objective: The development of a set of eight data-b...

Segways offer elderly users an opportunity to increase their mobility range and may also be useful as a training device. As of yet, very little is known about muscular activity during Segway use. Hence, the aim of this pilot study was to investigate the muscular strain during the use of Segways. For this purpose, 15 study participants were equipped...

Augmented reality game concepts can be used for health-related purposes in old age. Physical activity is a key aspect for healthy aging. Conceptual considerations and current research in the field of technology and aging are examined here to recommend designs for augmented reality games for older adults. We explore relevant trends in augmented real...

Background: Information and communication technology increasingly addresses the information needs patients have regarding their personal health. While an understanding of older adults' needs is crucial for developing successful eHealth technology, user research results hardly apply to different systems. Objective: The present study aims at: (1)...

Deep understanding of users’ needs is crucial for developing successful digital health technology. At the beginning of system development, it is thus important to analyze and specify the context of use within the users-centered development process. Knowing what patients need to know about their health and which information sources they apply to fin...

Project
The aim of the project is to identify, prioritise and clearly process the ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) of digital platform systems, which in particular should also include industrial science and sociological aspects. On this basis, design recommendations and strategies for action are to be developed. Research questions to be answered include, among others: What priority do ELSI aspects have with regard to the necessary consideration in research and innovation development projects? How could digital platform systems develop further in the near and distant future and create framework conditions for "good work"? How do digital platforms affect citizens?

What we want to achieve is that people are able to live in their usual domestic setting independently for a longer time. We especially want to increase the treatment adherence and acceptance in the context of the integration of telemedicine systems and services by means of age-appropriate interfaces. Therefore it is our task to collect profound scientific findings in the context of the use and usability of modern and telemedicine technology while taking into consideration the advancing age of the users.
