Introduction
I work at Department of Education, Faculty of Education, Masaryk University. Currently, I am conducting two research projects funded by Czech Science Foundation: 1) Ethnography of diversity in pre-service teacher education (2019–2021) as a co-investigator and 2) Narrative identities of participants in education at private alternative schools (2020–2022) as a main investigator. Previous projects were focused on classroom management and power in the classes taught by student teachers.

The project will allow for in-depth research on selected alternative schools across the compulsory education spectrum from primary to lower secondary level. It comprehensively takes up the narrative identities of participants in these schools (head teachers, teachers, pupils, parents) and classroom discourse.
The aim of the project is to describe in detail how power is negotiated, used, and perceived by student teachers and their pupils
on the level of lower secondary schools (ISCED 2A) whom the student teachers teach during their one semester long teaching
practice. The project pursues the following partial aims: (1) to establish the concept of power in the Czech scientific educational
discourse; (2) to carry out a research study using mixed methods that comprises (a) qualitative part in ethnographic research
design that aims to describe power relationships between student teachers and pupils in the classroom; (b) quantitative part that
aims to discover how power is perceived by student teachers and pupils which includes adaptation of a questionnaire on how
student teachers and pupils perceive power; (3) to increase the current understanding of theory, possibilities, and limitations of
mixed methods design.
The research will explore theoretical and practical aspects of pre-service teacher education in relation to the pressing issue of diversity. Diversity is conceptualized as negotiated in everyday interactions. The research is situated in the tradition of school ethnography and employs multi-sided ethnography, which is suitable for the simultaneous study of the links among multiple related contexts (the university and the lower-secondary school environment). The research focuses on 1) the ways in which students in a Master’s teacher education program become acquainted with the principles of working with diversity during the general education courses, 2) the ways in which diversity is constructed at the lower-secondary schools where the students do
their teaching practice. The project introduces an innovative methodological approach and expands ethnographic research in the university environment.
