The present study proposes a new methodology that combines quantitative and qualitative data for the generation of representative personas for commuters. The profiles can be used to better understand their travel behaviour and mode choices. The research is based on the example of the region of Agder in Norway and aims to overcome the persona develo...

A basic assumption of many scientific theories on the topic of decision making is rational behaviour. However, previous authors assume the existence of behavioural biases in freight transport which impede rational decision making. Hardly any research exists on behavioural biases in freight transport. To address this gap, we carry out a systematic l...

COVID-19 has created new challenges for public transportation (PT). While being able to transport as many people as possible in a small space used to be an asset, proximity has become a problem in the wake of a viral disease pandemic. The lack of experience in Europe with pandemic situation management means that there is a strong need to analyse an...

Automated mobility will affect traffic participants of all transport modes, including drivers and passengers of AVs as well as the ones travelling in non-automated and/or connected vehicles of the surrounding traffic in mixed flows, along with all other traffic participants. When it comes to the different levels of vehicle automation in semi- or fu...

Challenged by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, public transport is suffering from low ridership and staggering economic losses. One of the factors which triggered such losses was the lack of preparedness among governments and public transport providers. The losses can be minimized if the passenger count can be predicted with a higher accurac...

A basic assumption of many scientific theories on the topic of decision making is rational behavior. However, due to the low share of sustainable transport modes, rational decision making in freight mode choice based on measurable criteria (e.g. cost and emissions) must be questioned. Previous authors assume the existence of behavioural biases in f...

The study uses the case of two regions with small and medium sized cities (Agder in Norway and the greater Innsbruck area in Austria) and two European capitals, Vienna and Oslo, to showcase the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on public transport ridership in northern and central Europe. The comprehensive timeline of actions taken by governments and...

We recently face an e-scooter hype in Europe. More and more e-scooter sharing offers are provided in cities and towns which are marketed as a last mile option. At the same time, a greater extent of private households has their own equipment. This trend is twofold as e-scooter offers not only provide benefits (e.g. in terms of accessibility) but als...
Conference Paper
The last few years have brought about a rapid change in transport infrastructure and transportation technology. It is assumed that the mobility sector will continue to develop dynamically in the future which poses a challenge for the European Transportation Network. So far, strategic plans (CEDR Action Plan and EU Policy) have been elaborated to en...
Conference Paper
The traffic system of urban areas is challenged by commuter traffic at peak periods. Especially motorized individual transport leads to congestion of the main transport axis and associated environmental and noise pollution. From a policy perspective, park-and-ride systems are necessary to ensure that commuters leave the car behind and cover at leas...

Current transport policy objectives aiming to increase active mobility can solely be achieved by changing people's mobility behavior. To arouse interest and influence the decision process of the people, adequate information sources and services as well as appropriate incentives and motivation have to be used, but they have to be target-group specif...

Purpose: In terms of freight transportation it is essential to pick the most convenient mode(s) of transport (MOT). To get a more flexible system, one can assume that the number of transport options at each hub should be maximized. Therefore, it is investigated how a new hub concept comprising four MOT, a so-called “quattromodal freight hub”, can b...

Changes made in urban street lighting not only influence peoples’ perception of public space but also affect mobility behavior. Even if current standards and regulations are addressed, lighting qualities vary widely depending on the technology used and the environment chosen for installation. Especially glare is a visual property that is not addres...

Cycling with children is a sensitive topic since people tend to be more careful and risk aware when carrying younger children along on their bikes. The decision whether to cy-cle with children is not only affected by appropriate cycling infrastructure and proficien-cy on a bike, but also depends on the design of the vehicle, its comforts or restric...

Population growth in cities and expanding city territory as well as population decline in rural areas pose a challenge for the existing transport network. Consequently, we observe a rapid change in transport infrastructure and transportation technology within the last few years. Due to novelty or differentness, it will initially be challenging to i...

Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology promises a great energy saving potential and is therefore increasingly used for traffic areas or urban spaces, respectively. While many LED luminaires for street lighting meet the current standards, many light experts as well as the general public judge the lightings as glaring and visually uncomfortable. This...

The integration of innovative means of transport, like the Hyperloop concept, cargo drones and cargo zeppelins, into existing transport networks presents a challenge not only from a technological point of view, but also has various economic, social, and ecological impacts. Therefore, this work estimates regional impacts of a connection utilizing in...

European cities and regions strive for energy efficiency to meet the Europe 2020 goals on climate change and energy sustainability. At present, the transport sector is one of the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions due to the dependence on fossil fuels. The switch to renewable energies together with improvements in energy efficiency often caus...

In this article, we take stock of the findings from conceptual and empirical work on the role of transition initiatives for accelerating transitions as input for modeling acceleration dynamics. We applied the qualitative modeling approach of causal loop diagrams to capture the dynamics of a single transition initiative evolving within its regional...

Currently, the linkage of the four transportation modes, namely, road, rail, water and air on a quattro-modal freight hub is a low-priority issue with many uncertainties. The Austrian research project “Q4” focuses on this knowledge gap and on both potentials and limits of quattro-modal freight hubs. Therefore, the results of the Austrian research p...

Promoting active mobility, i.e. walking and cycling, does not only require providing the adequate infrastructure. It is necessary to identify efficient ways to inform people and to arouse interest to actually change mobility behaviour. The challenge is to identify homogeneous (target) groups of shared mobility-related information needs and to extra...

One crux of intermodal freight transportation is the ability to tranship goods from one mode of transport (MOT) towards another one. Typically, this is realised in bi- or trimodal hubs, i.e. hubs connecting two or three different MOT with each other. Talking of intermodal freight transportation these connected MOT are road, rail and/or (inland) nav...

Transition initiatives are becoming important drivers of sustainability transitions in city-regional (CR) contexts. However, too little is known about their potential impact on accelerating regional transitions as well as the interaction among them. The Multi Transition Initiative (MTI) Model is an agent-based simulation model that serves as a supp...
