This research investigated the relation between the degree of gated-ness of a neighbourhood and the level of neighbourhood cohesion among its residents. Such an investigation was prompted by the current practice of municipal planners for promoting a grid pattern of streets for neighbourhoods and linking such a pattern with principles of resilience...
Neighborhood cohesion seems to have evaded suburban neighborhoods or, at least, is no longer a natural outcome of daily life but must be consciously produced and maintained (Callies et al., 2003). Though the attraction of suburban neighborhoods for young middle-class families emanated from the search for neighborliness and community, suburbs eventu...
The social consequences of gating have been generally characterized as negative, particularly in regards to raising issues of social injustice such as the privatization of space, estrangement, and segregation. Some authors have found positive social consequences of gating particularly in regard to reducing the scale of segregation and promoting soc...

What type of unity should the form of the built environment have? How homogeneous or heterogeneous should its consistency be? Which rhythmic pattern and aesthetic should it follow? To what tune should it play, urban jazz? More importantly, how are we to deal with the transition from one type, consistency, pattern to another? If we take a quick glan...

Contemporary shopping malls in Egypt have created new public spaces for lifestyle and leisure, which complement the commercial logic of consumer behavior. Mega malls in Egypt are simultaneously merging shopping, leisure, and entertainment, creating an ambivalence. They are representations of the globalized economy, but also manifest a certain uniqu...
The objective of our research is to explore an important aspect of social sustainability— neighborhood cohesion—in a suburban context by comparing performance across three dimensions—sense of place attachment, sense of community, and social interaction of residents. We hypothesize that neighborhood cohesion might be high, but there might be some ph...
Neighbourhood cohesion is a desirable outcome of socially sustainable communities. However, such an outcome is not necessarily associated with suburban master-planned communities. This empirical research measures affective and interactive dimensions of neighbourhood cohesion and their correlations with residents' perception of neighbourhood uniquen...
Urban planners today are biased towards a model of neighborhood planning that may be leading them down the wrong path in the design and approval of neighbourhood developments. Many urban planners working today tend to promote a grid pattern of streets for neighbourhoods under the mantra of connectivity, resilience, and sustainability while altogeth...
Online education changes all components of teaching and learning in higher education and with these changes come pedagogical challenges. Unlike other disciplines, Architecture is uniquely positioned as it combines Art, Philosophy and Science while also being a professional practice that shapes the built environment of cities we inhabit. As we shall...
The paper explores the potential of using the animation of abstract images to depict scientific concepts and their development. This chapter proposes to bridge the gap between the differences in knowledge domains (STEM subjects and Liberal Arts) by emphasizing the role of visual abstract thinking. The suggestion is that visualization of knowledge e...

The main argument of this chapter is that a city can be a frame for sustainability, but that this is contingent upon how the city is represented. Representations of a city are not merely a tool for expressing particular aspects of the city but also a tool for framing the relation between sustainability and the city. This means that failure to repre...

This paper builds on extensive literature exploring the impact of internal and external structural characteristics of a neighbourhood on its identity and the social cohesion of residents. We look at physical structural aspects of newly planned suburban neighbourhoods, focusing on key characteristics such as access, connectivity, built form, housing...
This paper compares the level of neighbourhood cohesion of two single access neighbourhoods in Calgary, Alberta. The two neighbourhoods had a high sense of neighbourhood cohesion. It is argued that the single access to the neighbourhood has contributed to a high sense of neighbourhood cohesion. One neighbourhood outperformed the other on all three...

One of the dimensions of social sustainability is neighbourhood cohesion among residents of a neighbourhood. This paper compares the social sustainability of two neighbourhoods in Vancouver metropolitan area particularly in the...
