Scientific integrity & accountability in research on Oriental pipes. First Cancer studies on Humans. Exposed greatest frauds in BioMed research since 2002: 1) ""Waterpipe"" literature is based on US-Am Univ Beirut grotesque smoking robot (Toxicants vary up to +70 times btw 2 studies...); 2) Invent° & Hyping of a 400-yr old "Global Epidemic" & "Addiction"; etc. >Critique of WHO flawed report. Work plagiarised by: Bertrand Dautzenberg (OFT,France) 2007; Maynard O et al (Addiction, Nov 2013); etc.

We have recently published some work on CEA levels in hookah (also called narghile, shisha elsewhere) and cigarette smokers. Hookah smokers had higher levels of CEA than non-smokers although mean levels were low compared to cigarette smokers. However some of them were also users of other tobacco products (cigarettes, bidis, etc.).
To find serum CEA...
Hookah (narghile, shisha, "water-pipe") smoking is now seen by public health officials as a global tobacco epidemic. Cigarette Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) is classically understood as a combination of Side-Stream Smoke (SSS) and Exhaled Main-Stream Smoke (EMSS), both diluted and aged. Some of the corresponding cigarette studies have served as...
The medical hypothesis that the mainstream smoke (the one inhaled by the user) from "water pipes" (mainly: shisha, hookah, narghile) causes oral cancer is certainly acceptable. However, most of the recent reviews on this issue, including an attempt to develop an hypothesis for hookah carcinogenesis, have not cited key references of the world availa...
The World Health Organisation Study Group on Tobacco Product Regulation (TobReg) has issued in 2005 an "Advisory Note" entitled: "Waterpipe Tobacco Smoking: Health Effects, Research Needs and Recommended Actions by Regulators". "Waterpipe" smoking is now considered a global public health threat and the corresponding artefact is actually known in th...
BACKGROUND: The traditional definition of an “epidemic” has been revisited by antismoking researchers. After 400 years, Doctors would have realized that one aspect of an ancient cultural daily practice of Asian and African societies was in fact a “global “epidemic””. This needed further investigation particularly if one keeps in his mind the health...
Smoking is a documented cause of a very serious health hazardous due to inhalation of various toxic agents. However, data about tobacco-derived products such as moassel/tabamel and jurak, used in the growingly popular shisha (narghile, hookah), have been scarce and scattered. In these conditions, the objective of this study, was to investigate the...
Narghile (hookah, shisha, goza, ‘‘water-pipe’’) smoking has become fashionable worldwide. Its tobacco
pastes, known as moassel and jurak, are not standardized and generally contain about 30–50% (sometimes
more) tobacco, molasses/juice of sugarcane, various spices and dried fruits (particularly in jurak)
and, in the case of moassel, glycerol and fla...
Cigarette smoking is documented source of human internal intake of toxic trace and heavy metals. However, data about tobacco-derived products such as moassel/tabamel and jurak, used in the growingly popular shisha (narghile, hookah), have been scarce and scattered. In these conditions, the objective of this study, the first ever carried out on this...
This "non-catalogue" book was prepared for mere personal and scientific reasons. It is dedicated in the first instance to late Pr Joseph Aquilina and to the Maltese Diaspora in particular. Built upon a bibliography of about 110 top-quality scientific references, it addresses though a quite simple question: "Why is Maltese so close to Tunisian speak...

A critique of Boskabady MH, Farhang L, Mahmodinia M, Boskabady M, Heydari GR. Com-parison of pulmonary function and respiratory symptoms in water pipe and cigarette smokers. Respirology 2012;17(6):950–6. Doi: 10.1111/j.1440-1843.2012.02194.x
Notes: Boskabady et al' study was consensually praised by antismoking activists: e.g. "Hookah Effects as Har...

Introduction. Studies of the lung function profiles of ENS are few, have some methodologic limits and present contradictory conclusions.
Aim. Compare the plethsymographic profiles of an ENS group with these of two control groups: ECS and healthy non-smokers subjects (HNS).
Population and methods. Inclusion criteria for ENS group: males aged 35-60...
The alpha-radioactive polonium 210 (Po-210) is one of the most powerful carcinogenic agents of tobacco smoke and is responsible for the histotype shift of lung cancer from squamous cell type to adenocarcinoma. According to several studies, the principal source of Po-210 is the fertilizers used in tobacco plants, which are rich in polyphosphates con...
Tobacco smoking is hazardous for health. However, not all forms of tobacco use entail the same risks and the latter should be studied and compared in a sound realistic way. Smoking machines for cigarettes (which are consumed in a few minutes) were early designed as a tool to evaluate the actual intake of toxic substances ('toxicants') by smokers. H...
"Unfortunately, Raad et al 3 did not highlight the characteristics
of utmost importance: product type, amount, and frequency
of use. Consequently, authors of related reviews, particularly
systematic reviews and meta-analyses, should realize that they
face a diversity of nonstandardized pipes, smoking products,
and quantities. Their use implies diff...
Introduction. The use of narghile (called "chicha" in Nord Africa) has taken in recent years a considerable extent. To our knowledge, studies on the aerobic capacity of the exclusive narghile smokers (ENS) are absent. Also, such studies seem necessary in view of effective prevention of cardiopulmonary diseases.
Aims. i. Assess, through the 6-minut...

Aim: Much has been written about the toxicity of narghile (hookah, shisha) smoke. However, it is seldom mentioned that narghile smoke is actually far less complex than that of cigarettes. In spite of being a much simpler object to research, there has been a world of avoidable and preventable confusion due, to a great extent, to the inappropriate us...

This comment is based on a critical review of a study on blood pressure and heart rate in shisha (narghile, hookah) smokers in Jordan.
Subjects and methods
The study was analysed against the most recent literature on this issue, in general, and against peer-reviewed biomedical publications from the Middle East, in particular.

Hookah (narghile, shisha) smoking is growing worldwide and particularly in France. The main reasons for this are: first, the arrival on the market of new highly flavored tobacco-based mixtures; second, a new type of charcoal used as a quick heating source; third, the pleasure to experiment with an exotic orientalist practice or the desire to return...

Many biomedical studies of the past seven years have failed in giving a sound picture of what hookah (shisha, narghile, goza) smoke and smoking are. The reasons are many: from the widespread use of a confusing neologism ("waterpipe") instead of the few clear and natural words used for centuries by indigenous and non-indigenous people in their real...

Important note: In order to avoid the burning of the smoking mixture (moassel) at some point, a small mechanical lever allows the user to bring closer to the bowl the heating element or keep it away, at bay, when the smoke gets thicker.

The narghile (hookah, shisha, “waterpipe”) is a key element of everyday's life in the Middle East. Its ethnographic, folkloric and anthropological dimensions are analysed in relation to its traditional settings and particularly the Oriental coffee-houses. Then, we try to understand the long silence of social sciences regarding this ancient and comm...
Hookah (Narghile), its practice, the past and present research on it and the corresponding methodological problems have been set out in Tabaccologia 1/2005. In issue 3/2005, its pharmaco-physiological aspects (nicotine, tar, CO, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, heavy metals) were given a detailed description. Here, the health aspects and related p...
ABSTRACT
This paper is the last one of a Tetralogy on Narghile (Hookah, Shisha) and Health worked out within a transdisciplinary socio-anthropological and biomedical framework. 15 reasons are outlined to help understand the corresponding sudden world craze. The article analyses the relationship with the world tobacco industry, the relevance of comp...

A first review of relevant medical and pharmacological studies was carried on by the author within the framework of a doctoral research encompassing all aspects - socio-anthropological, historical and tobaccological - of narghile (hookah, waterpipe) use. Further to the revival of its use in the Mi...
Hookah (Narghile) and its practice have been introduced in the last issue through the methodological problems, the state and evolution of knowledge about it until the most recent research existing in this field. We will now offer a review of its pharmaco-physiological aspects in direct relation to the very peculiarity of this tobacco use mode known...
