Introduction
I am trained in applying different micro-econometric and psychometric tools, with (and without) sociological theory, to understand issues concerning education, labour, politics & policy and development. My interests fall broadly in the domains of epistemology, quantitative methods and social policy, among other things.
I am always on the lookout for interesting data-driven stories filled with twists or drama.

This chapter discusses how social justice is related to education in the labor market. While seldom considered in literature on education for social justice, the role of education in developing skills raises challenging questions. On the one hand, many understandings of fairness would permit an individual who has undertaken advanced levels of educa...
Policy discourses posit an accountability deficit as an underlying cause of a “learning crisis” in many low-income countries. Many studies understand this perceived deficit from a principal-agent perspective, arguing that incentives facing teachers and schools often do not align to the interests of parents and students. Such perspectives underlie m...
This paper examines the link between decentralisation in school management and student achievement levels in secondary schools in India. It employs observational data from two school surveys conducted as part of the Young Lives project in the southern Indian states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to create a measure of decentralisation as a latent...
We investigate how religion concordance influences the effectiveness of preventive health campaigns. Conducted during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in two major Indian cities marked by Hindu–Muslim tensions, we randomly assigned a representative sample of slum residents to receive either a physician-delivered information campaign promot...
The UK has one of the highest proportions of tertiary educated workers in Europe but also one of the highest rates of graduate underemployment. Little is known however about the extent to which there is a scarring effect of early graduate underemployment on future labour market outcomes. In this paper, we examine the effect of early underemployment...
We use PISA(2018) data to examine the achievement levels of secondary school students with an immigration background in the UK in comparison to other Anglophone countries. We construct several multi-level models and find that second-generation students are more likely to underperform compared to others and first-generation students perform better t...
We study how social proximity between the sender and the receiver of information shapes the effectiveness of preventive health behaviour campaigns and the persistence of misinformation. We implement a field experiment among a representative sample of slum residents in two major Indian cities characterized by Hindu-Muslim tensions. We show that info...
This paper uses data from a study of schools in India to examine how head teachers reacted to the Covid-19 school closures. We consider how differences in the decision-making autonomy of school leaders affect their confidence and coping strategies, and explore how this may help mitigate the otherwise unequalising effects of the pandemic.
This report presents the results of an EEF-funded, independent evaluation designed to investigate the extent to which, and in what ways, Research Schools (RSs) in Opportunity Areas (OAs)1 had supported schools to enact evidence-based practices in their classrooms. The evidence centred upon the lived experiences of ten OA RSs during the first three...
Widespread misconceptions can be critical, especially in times of crisis. Through a field experiment, we study how to address such wrong or inaccurate beliefs using messages delivered to individual citizens using mobile phones. We focus on misinformation related to the COVID-19 pandemic in a hard-to-reach population – India’s slum residents. We ran...
This data article describes the dataset of the International COVID-19 Impact on Parental Engagement Study (ICIPES). ICIPES is a collaborative effort of more than 20 institutions to investigate the ways in which, parents and caregivers built capacity engaged with children's learning during the period of social distancing arising from global COVID-19...

In light of the recent education reforms in Italy (La Buona Scuola, Law 107/15) featuring autonomy and digital skills, this paper examines the impact of teachers’ pedagogical autonomy on students’ computer literacy. The empirical analysis is conducted using data from the latest cycle of the International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICI...

Participation in child labour, in both household and non-household activities, gender effects and low educational attainment remain challenges for countries in Latin America. Through hierarchical linear modelling of data from the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), this study seeks to explore the current cross-country tren...
This paper seeks to empirically evaluate the association of decentralization of education systems and student achievement. It employs PISA (2015) data to perform multilevel analysis for each and every participating country. Decentralization effects are estimated on the imputed scores of mathematics after controlling for various student-level and sc...
This report highlights disparities in children’s participation rates across a wide range of extra-curricular activities depending on their social background.
The focus of the study is to examine and relocate gender equality in higher education using Capability Approach as the background frame.
