To counteract the spread of Covid-19, many countries have introduced mobile applications for contact tracing, which raises considerable questions about how these apps protect users’ information privacy. Through an exploratory analysis of Covid-19 contact tracing apps being used in Australia, France, Germany, Japan, and New Zealand, we identify norm...
Mobile emergency warning apps are essential for effective emergency communication – of course, provided the population intends to use them. Drawing on protection motivation theory, the study validated a psychometric model to explain what motivates individuals to install a warning app for the first time and to keep using it over time. Multi-group co...
Research on the role of social media in crisis management has led to a deeper understanding of their affordances. This research, however, is fragmented, with a primary focus on crisis response. We lack a clear conceptualization of the affordances that social media offer by learning from them to prepare strategically for crises. Based on a systemati...
The evolution theory of ageing predicts that reproduction comes with long-term costs of survival. However, empirical studies in human species report mixed findings of the relationship between fertility and longevity, which varies by populations, time periods, and individual characteristics. One explanation underscores that changes in survival condi...
In this design study, we present IRVINE, a Visual Analytics (VA) system, which facilitates the analysis of acoustic data to detect and understand previously unknown errors in the manufacturing of electrical engines. In serial manufacturing processes, signatures from acoustic data provide valuable information on how the relationship between multiple...
We explore what benefits network position in online business social networks like LinkedIn might confer to an aspiring entrepreneur. We compare two network attributes, size and embeddedness, and two actor attributes, location and diversity, between virtual and real-world networks. The promise of social networks like LinkedIn is that network friends...
Effective emergency communication is crucial, as it increases a population’s attentiveness and ability to respond to emergencies in a timely manner. However, authorities have sometimes struggled with using emergency warning systems (EWS) effectively, leading to warnings that are late, inaccurate, or sometimes are never issued at all. This research...
The highly integrated design of the electrified powertrain creates new challenges in the holistic testing of high-quality standards. Particularly test technicians face the challenge, that lots of machine-sensor data is recorded during these tests that needs to be analyzed. We present VIMA, a VA system that processes high dimensional machine-sensor...

Effective warning can be life-saving in the event of an emergency. The pervasiveness of smartphones among the population affords public authorities a distributed network they can leverage for emergency notification. In Germany, for instance, warning apps (e.g., NINA, Katwarn) are integrated within emergency warning systems (EWS) authorities use for...
Openness is often deeply embedded in information technology (IT); it can be both a driver for and a result of new forms of dealing with information resources and can make major differences for businesses. Resource-level theories explain competitive advantages and differences in the performance of firms through their exclusive possession and use of...
Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that focus on humanitarianism, such as the Red Cross, provide services that make the world a better place. To do so, they are highly dependent on a network that generates goodwill, volunteers, and donations. Social Networking Sites (SNS) are a vital channel for NGOs to pursue their organisational objectives. Ho...
In this paper, we investigate how social media can be utilised to support the integration of emergency medical services (EMS) and crisis management activities. We explore the literature both on social media in crisis management and on EMS logistics to elaborate on their potential to support EMS logistics planning based on the experiences from crisi...
Recent terrorist attacks have increased the need to examine the public's response to such threats. This study focuses on the content of Twitter messages related to the 2016 terrorist attack on the Berlin Christmas market. Whether the personal views of journalists affect their publication decisions is a much debated question in communication science. In a comparative survey of German and Italian journalists using the example of the euro crisis, Andrea Weitzel shows not only that colleagues, superiors and the editorial line are more important than one's own views. She...
The power of visual analysis of Enterprise Architecture (EA) model tends to diminish when we deal with large and complex viewpoints. However, we still can extract useful information from them. In this work, we apply ideas from the Design Structure Matrix (DSM) theory to derive enterprise architecture viewpoints from primary models already available...
Researchers and practitioners alike recognise the importance of emergency management (EM) in limiting the adverse impacts of crisis events, as well as the promise of social media to support these efforts. Decision making, which is crucial to ensure the effective management of immediate, emerging, and sustained crises, is one facet of EM potentially...
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to show that virtual mirroring-based learning allows members of an organization to see how they communicate with others in a visual way, by applying principles of “social quantum physics” (empathy, entanglement, reflect, reboot), to become better communicators and build a shared “DNA” within their organization....
There is evidence that people increasingly use social networking sites like Twitter in the aftermath of terrorist attacks to make sense of the events at the collective level. This work-in-progress paper focuses on the content of Twitter messages related to the 2016 terrorist attack on the Berlin Christmas market. We chose topic modeling to investig...

Agent-based modeling has become a common and well-established tool in the social sciences and certain of the humanities. Here, we aim to provide an overview of the different modeling approaches in current use. Our discussion unfolds in two parts: we first classify different aspects of the model-building process and identify a number of characterist...
Modeling, analysis, control, and management of complex social networks represent an important area of interdisciplinary research in an advanced digitalized world. In the last decade social networks have produced significant online applications which are running on top of a modern Internet infrastructure and have been identified as major driver of t...
In the wake of an increasing interest in the communication networks of emergency responders, radio communication systems have been recognized as an important source of digital trace data. Among the many aspects of IT personnel studied by the information systems (IS) research community, individual voluntary IT turnover is one of the most-examined phenomena. However, research into this phenomenon concentrates mainly on antecedents and cognitive precursors such as turnover intention. Antecedents are essential to understanding the turno...
As part of an ongoing research project, we have designed and implemented a mobile crisis response system (MCRS), which creates a nexus between relief organizations and unaffiliated disaster volunteers. We developed the MCRS using a design science approach and address information management, coordination, and motivation challenges in the context of...
Data and information quality (DIQ) have been defined traditionally in an organizational context and with respect to traditional information systems (IS). Numerous frameworks have been developed to operationalize traditional DIQ accordingly. However, over the last decade, social information systems (SocIS) such as social media have emerged that enab...

The increasing number of man-made crises presents relief organizations with serious challenges. For one, paid relief workers are increasingly scarce, making disaster volunteers essential components of official endeavors. But there are several issues concerning communication with as well as coordination and organization of disaster volunteers that h...
While the use of social IT-enabled "internal crowdsourcing" with employees in organizations has substantially increased in recent years (e.g., LEGO, IBM), internal crowdsourcing is not well understood from a theoretical point of view. In this research in progress, we build on the literature on new forms of organizing to improve our theoretical unde...
Recent terrorist attacks and several terror alerts have increased the need to investigate the behavioral consequences of these threats. This research-in-progress paper focuses on the motivational factors determining usage behavior of social network sites (SNS) in the aftermath of terrorist attacks. Based on terror management theory (TMT) and uses a...
In software development projects, documents are very important for sharing requirements and other information among employees. However, information can be transported in different ways. Conversations, meetings, workshops and emails convey and impart information as well. Especially large companies struggle in dealing with unclear and incorrect infor...
The use of IT-enabled crowdsourcing with employees in enterprises has increased substantially in recent years. This phenomenon, which we refer to as “internal crowdsourcing”, is distinct both from external crowdsourcing with end users and from hierarchy-based work with employees. A literature stream has emerged that corresponds with the increased r...
The widespread availability and use of social media has drastically altered disaster response in the last few years. Although a considerable amount of empirical research addresses social phenomena enabled by social media in response to disasters, the field still lacks a clear-cut knowledge base. We conduct a systematic literature review to illustra...
Communication between and within crisis response organizations (i.e., fire and rescue services, medical assistance, government agencies, public organizations, police) and the public (i.e., victims, volunteers, people affected by the attacks) is essential for coping with natural or man-made crises such as Hurricane Katrina or the terror attacks of 9...
Online consumer-generated product reviews are a growing phenomenon and have led to the posting of colossal amounts of data by consumers on the Web. These data include consumers' thoughts, opinions, and feelings about brands and offer firms the opportunity to "listen in" on consumers to get a better understanding of the topics discussed about their...
We study the communication patterns of particularly creative people in the R&D department of a global energy firm through their e-mail communication. We find that the most creative staff members, measured through patents, publications, and awards, are less central in the full corporate network, but more responsive and responded to, which we take as...
Data and information quality (DIQ) have been defined traditionally in an organizational context and with respect to traditional information systems (IS) as, for example, “fitness for use” of data or “intrinsic” DIQ. Numerous frameworks have been developed that operationalize traditional DIQ accordingly. However, over the last decade, social IS such...
Organizations increasingly rely on group-based organizational structures to manage uncertain environments. However, at the group level there is still a limited understanding of how boundary-spanning activities should be managed to increase group performance. In this paper, we propose "out-group-tie centralization" as a concept that refers to the va...
Social media are a primary means for travelers to connect with each other and plan trips. They can also help tourism suppliers (e.g., by providing relevant information), thus overcoming the shortcomings of traditional information sources. User-generated content from social media has already been used in many studies as a primary information source....
The crowdfunding phenomenon has garnered a considerable amount of attention in recent years. Several online crowdfunding platforms have risen to prominence; they can be characterized as two-sided marketplaces. Recent research reveals initial insights into the dynamics and characteristics of crowdfunding networks arising from such marketplaces. This...
A central challenge organizations face is how to build, store, and maintain knowledge over time. Enterprise wikis are community-based knowledge systems situated in an organizational context. These systems have the potential to play an important role in managing knowledge within organizations, but the motivating factors that drive individuals to con...
The management of information technology (IT) as a business has become a crucial factor in today’s complex and dynamic environments. Many firms thus have implemented IT portfolio and enterprise architecture (EA) management practices, and academic research has paid increasing attention to these concepts. However, their integration seems poorly subst...
This paper examines cross-cultural gender differences in the adoption and usage of the social media platform Last.FM. From a large-scale empirical study of 3,748 Last.FM users from Australia, Finland, Germany, and the United States of America, we find: 1) men listen to more pieces of music on social media platforms than do women; 2) women focus the...
The goal of this paper is to study the psychographic and demographic attributes and the interests of lifestyle of health and sustainability (LOHAS) consumers. Based on a dataset of 3,813 user profiles from the largest LOHAS community site on Facebook, we applied association rule mining and logistic regression to achieve this goal. We focused our wo...
A considerable number of organizations continually face difficulties bringing strategy to execution, and suffer from a lack of structure and transparency in corporate strategic management. Yet, enterprise architecture as a fundamental exercise to achieve a structured description of the enterprise and its relationships appears far from being adopted...

Just as most people are not WEIRD, the assumption of industry uniformity may not be true in all cases. Several reviews showed that IS research does not take industry seriously enough. Neglecting industry context can have a severe effect on research results by underspecifying theory or by leading to general explanations that do not hold in other con...
Software ecosystems (SECOs) driven by platform business models have changed how consumer software is produced and marketed. Also in the enterprise software segment, value networks in the form of SECOs are replacing traditional business models and linear value chains. These SECOs involve three main types of actors: platform sponsor, complementors, a...
There has been a considerable amount of recent research on the link prediction problem, that is, the problem of accurately predicting edges that will be established between actors in a social network in a future period. With the cooperation of the provider of a German social network site (SNS), we aim to contribute to this line of research by analy...
IT and entrepreneurship are having a ‘love affair’. Rapid developments in ICT, especially the rise of the Internet, have enabled digitized business models and fostered a flourishing environment of innovation and disruption. However, many promising new ventures fail or run out of funding.
The business models concept has seen increasing attention fro...
There is a considerable amount of entrepreneurial activity in the information technology (IT) industry, especially in the Web. Many claim that the founders are the single most critical factor in startup success. The entrepreneurial self-efficacy theory and the jack-of-all-trades theory suggest that founders with diverse skills and broad experience...
Management of the enterprise architecture has become increasingly recognized as a crucial part of both business and IT management. Still, a common understanding and methodological consistency seems far from being developed. Acknowledging the significant role of research in moving the development process along, this article employs different bibliom...
Dependency analyses have become crucial in today's enterprise architecture practices, which usually face complex IT landscapes with highly interdependent applications. In such environments, a deep understanding of the application's context is essential to determine its qualities and project its further evolution. However, method support for making...
Increasingly, people use Social Media to relate their experiences and thoughts regarding travel and tourism. Others use this information to plan better and make better decisions in the context of travel and tourism. Several studies have investigated trust in, contribution to, and consumption of tourism- related Social Media and its impact on people...
In this project we aim to analyze “honest signals” between Jazz musicians by using sociometric badges with the goal of identifying structural properties of self-organizing creative teams. In particular, we are interested in the pre-requisites for “flow,” the state of work where “time flies,” and workers are at their most-productive best. We extend...
We describe the results of an experiment capturing the face-to-face 'honest signals' of knowledge workers through sociometric badges. We find that collective creativity of teams is a function of the aggregated social capital of members. The higher it is, the higher their creative output. We collected communication data of 14 graduate students and t...
We present a method for extracting semantic networks of words that consumers associate with products and brands, and illustrate the method using reviews of McDonald's products from the opinion platform www.ciao.de as examples. We model the generation of each product review with the probabilistic topic model Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), which...
