In this paper we explored three areas: decision making and information seeking, the relationship between information seeking and uncertainty, and the role of expertise in influencing information use. This was undertaken in the context of a qualitative study into decision making in the initial stages of emergency response to major incidents. The res...

The role of closed loop supply chains (CLSC) for creating and recovering value is widely acknowledged in supply chain management and there are many examples, mainly in the business-to-business sector, of successful OEM remanufacturing. The integration of value creation and recovery activities into retail customer value propositions is, however, und...

As the economy becomes more reliant on innovative, knowledge-intensive firms, understanding the interaction between knowledge and improving innovation performance is increasingly important. Despite the majority of UK businesses being micro, small or medium-sized enterprises (micro/SMEs), knowledge management research has tended to focus on large co...

Purpose The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to advance the knowledge of Circular Business Models (BMs) over linear models by focusing on new dynamics which are unique to developing countries and have mostly been overlooked by contemporary literature; and second, to bring to the fore aspects of human-sphere which are currently under-researc...

Humanitarian supply chain (HSC) research is still in its infancy and remains an enigma, due to its profound differences with the much-researched field of global supply chains. Thus, humanitarian operations (HO) remain obstinately difficult to manage, despite attempts by key stakeholders to keep abreast of all the contemporary challenges. A key conc...

The circular economy (CE) is preferred to linear economy (LE) as it aims to keep resources in use for as long as possible, extracting maximum value before recovering and regenerating them. This reduces the need to extract new raw materials and reduces waste, leading to more sustainable economic growth. Contrarily, LE also known as a ”take, make, us...

There has been a consistent rise in urban disasters, particularly in developing countries located in tropical areas. Among various challenges of disaster risk management and climate change impacts, it is noted that most residents are poorly informed about their risk exposure or apposite response. The paper is based on the premise that one important...

In today's information age, both excess and lack of information can cause a disaster. COVID-19 pandemic not only highlighted the significance of risk communication but also pointed out several unintended and distressing consequences due to information gaps and miscommunications. Despite facing a common threat, the local communities suffered differe...

s Food waste and loss (FWL), although a growing problem in the world, there is limited research especially from the developing country context. In this research, we investigate FWL in the processing and distribution stage of the Nigerian Food Supply Chain (FSC). We propose the use of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) tools coupled with Double Loop Learning (DLL...
Article
The paradox that tonnes of food is wasted while people go hungry has raised concern from national and international authorities. In developed countries, reducing these problems has focused on surplus food distribution as a 'win-win' solution contributing to sustainable development goals. While the existing literature acknowledges the role of third-...

The traditional linear economy using a take‐make‐dispose model is resource intensive and has adverse environmental impacts. Circular economy (CE) which is regenerative and restorative by design is recommended as the business model for resource efficiency. While there is a need for businesses and organisations to switch from linear to CE, there are...

Purpose: This paper highlights how biological waste materials can be used for generating much needed energy and obtaining nutrient rich compost for agriculture through Anaerobic Digestion (AD). The paper further highlights the importance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in using AD for Waste-to-Energy (WTE) leading to many environmental benef...

Communication is fundamental to the transfer of information between individuals, agencies and organizations, and therefore, it is crucial to planning and decision-making particularly in cases of uncertainty and risk. This paper brings forth some critical aspects of communication that need to be acknowledged and considered while managing risks. Most...
Conference Paper
Sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) has been investigated comparatively more in developed countries than in developing countries. Recent papers have delved into some issues of developing countries, but focal companies are in developed countries and suppliers are operating from developing countries. In this paper, sustainability issues relate...

The resilience of systems derives from many inputs, relating both to design and to operational planning. In the latter context the role and effective functioning of the ‘blue light’ emergency services is often critical. The judgements and decisions that have to be made are complex and time-constrained, often undertaken before all the critical infor...

Introduction. Decision making though an important information use has not been vigorously researched in information practices research. By studying how decision makers make decision in groups, we can learn about several underlying issues in information practices. Method. The research reported in this paper explored decision making and information use by public safety personal leading teams responding to major incidents. The research methodology was qualitative using critical incident technique and observation grounded in Activity Theory as meta-theoretical framework. Information sharing is vital for the successful completion of a group task. It’s significance is emphasized in situations where group members are drawn from different organizations, where members do not know each other and when they are making complex, time dependent decisions within an uncertain environmental context. In this paper we address info...

Emergency situations are chaotic in nature. It is however, necessary to understand the context in which Emergency Responders work such that information practice issues can be highlighted and addressed by the system designers. In this paper, Activity Theory is proposed as a methodological and analytical framework to study information practices in th...

This paper presents a Call Admission Control (CAC) algorithm based fuzzy logic to maintain the quality of service using cell breathing concept. When a new call is accepted by a cell, its current user is generally affected due to cell breathing. The proposed CAC algorithm accepts a new call only if the current users in the cell are not jeopardized....

To start the discussion around the role of digital technology in the Circular Economy, we are organising one day workshop before the European Conference in Information Systems (ECIS), Kristiansand, Norway on the 12th of June.
If you are interested in this topic then send an extended abstract (500 words) to Jyoti Mishra (J.L.MISHRA@LEEDS.AC.UK). Although this workshop is hybrid, we would prefer an in-person presentation.
