Conference Paper
This talk summarizes the potential for critical minerals extraction from produced water and the current data constraints on making these evaluations. First, we present results from production simulations carried out using data from the Marcellus shale showing the lithium resource potential from this formation. Second, we broaden our estimations to...
Article

Decarbonatization initiatives have rapidly increased the demand for lithium. This study uses public waste compliance reports and Monte Carlo approaches to estimate total lithium mass yields from produced water (PW) sourced from the Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania (PA). Statewide, Marcellus Shale PW has substantial extractable lithium, however, conc...

Conference Paper
The poster, presented at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) 2023 Conference, highlights NETL's National Energy Water Treatment & Speciation (NEWTS) Database & Dashboard. This poster reviews the work done to aggregate disparate water quality data for energy-related wastewater streams, to process and integrate the datasets, and enable easy integrat...

Article
This study investigates the mineralization occurring at the interface between injected hydraulic fracturing fluids and steel production casing during the shut-in period of unconventional shale wells. Mild steel coupons were reacted with synthetic hydraulic fracturing fluids with varying base fluid and dissolved gas concentrations. Experiments were...
Article
This study reports data from the Upper Cambrian Conasauga Group and overlying Copper Ridge Formation of the Central Appalachian region, eastern U.S.A. Geochemical, isotopic and petrographic analysis of core material was carried out to constrain the extent of marine anoxia and to characterize sediment fluxes on the carbonate platform and continental...
