Introduction
Hey there! I´m a PhD-student at the University of Turku. My research deals with the conservation of semi-natural grasslands, their species, and the ecological, cultural and social values related to them. I'm interested especially in novel habitats and the urban environment, and try to produce practical answers to how we can utilise those two in grassland conservation.

Urban green areas contribute to climate change mitigation, support biodiversity and host a wide range of social values important for urban residents. Understanding the interplay between social values, biodiversity and carbon flow in urban green areas is vital for socially sustainable urban climate and biodiversity policy, but relationships between...

Urban green infrastructure is recognized for its potential to combat biodiversity loss and enhance carbon sequestration in cities. While residential yards constitute a significant part of urban green infrastructure, their role in providing urban ecosystem services remains largely understated. There is a lack of systematic measures for effectively i...

Urban green infrastructure can help cities tackle biodiversity loss and support well-being, but also contribute to climate change mitigation. This can be enhanced with green infrastructure policies that favor biodiversity, residential well-being, or climate benefits such as carbon sequestration. However, assessing public support for policies favori...

Private domestic gardens have immense potential to contribute to urban biodiversity conservation. However, they are divided into small private plots and managed individually by garden owners. Therefore, engagement in wildlife‐friendly gardening (WFG), which entails alternative management and design choices, relies on the individual willingness of e...

The area of semi-natural grasslands has decreased dramatically causing many grassland specialist species to persist in small habitat fragments. Furthermore, ecological communities once shaped by disturbances related to traditional agriculture now face the impacts of modern agriculture and urbanization. Many of the species have become endangered due...

Scientists have warned decision-makers about the severe consequences of the global environmental crisis since the 1970s. Yet ecological degradation con- tinues and little has been done to address climate change. We investigated early-career conservation researchers' (ECR) perspectives on, and prioritization of, actions furthering sustainability. We...

Grasslands are widespread elements of urban greenspace providing recreational, psychological and aesthetic benefits to city residents. Two urban grassland types of contrasting management dominate urban greenspaces: frequently mown, species-poor short-cut lawns and less intensively managed, near-natural tall-grass meadows. The higher conservation va...

Road verges could provide habitats for threatened grassland species, but current verge management is suboptimal for achieving this. Altering verge management to favor grassland species is possible but depends on stakeholder attitudes and valuation. We describe the attitudes of 373 Finnish road verge stakeholders toward grassland-friendly verge mana...

Increasing urbanization worldwide calls for more sustainable urban development. Simultaneously, the global biodiversity crisis accentuates the need of fostering biodiversity within cities. Policies supporting urban nature conservation need to understand people’s acceptance of biodiversity-friendly greenspace management. We surveyed more than 2,000...
Article
Many grassland specialist plant populations in Europe have been restricted to remnant habitats. The performance of these populations depends on both species‐specific traits and local and landscape level aspects of habitat quality. Understanding which specific local or landscape level conditions determine the performance of grassland species populat...

The correlations between urbanisation (quantified as the cover in ha of CORINE urban land use types within a circle 250 meters wide surrounding each grassland) and the species richness, abundance and composition of grassland indicator plant species in unmanaged dry grassland fragments.
Article
Full-text available
Agricultural intensification has caused drastic declines in the area and species richness of semi-natural grasslands across Europe. Novel habitats, such as power line clearings, provide alternative habitats and niches for grassland species, and might therefore mitigate these declines. However, it is not fully understood which environmental factors...

Carex caryophyllea Latourr. is a declining species typical to semi-natural dry meadows, and considered both vulnerable and of urgent conservation concern in Finland. Because the species is rare and difficult to notice in the field, and because the resources for endangered species surveys have diminished in recent years, comprehensive inventories of...

Regularly mown short lawns with high maintenance costs and low species diversity are emblematic to urban green spaces. Converting a part of these lawns into less intensively managed meadows or grassland areas could both help foster biodiversity in urban areas and diminish costs of management. However, varying mindsets and attitudes as well as trade...

Kukkulan runsas ketolaj...

Remnant patches of semi-natural grasslands maintain populations of threatened species and provide ecosystem services in urban areas. However, urban grasslands are often threatened by land use changes and lack of management. In addition to their biological values, historical, social and recreational values are at stake if the grasslands are lost. Wh...

Regularly managed electric power line corridors may provide habitats for both early-successional grassland plant species and disturbance-dependent alien plant species. These habitats are especially important in urban areas, where they can help conserve native grassland species and communities in urban greenspace. However, they can also provide furt...

The origin of Poa bulbosa L., a rare graminoid, in Halikko, Salo, south-western Finland (Varsinais-Suomi), is examined in relation to other known localities of the species in Finland and Sweden. Poa bulbosa is considered a neophyte in Finland, but descriptions of the species’ habitats in e.g. Sweden suggest that it could just as well be an archaeop...
