Project
The project brings to the fore the research of the role of physical activity in a child’s development, emphasizing the correlations between physical activity and development of social skills, such as peer and student-teacher relations, behaviour problems at school and at home (extraversion, introversion, hyperactivity), and academic performance. Physical activity represents an important external factor of the child’s advancement in all fields of development (physical, motor, cognitive, emotional and social). According to the theory of integrated development, all these fields of development are closely related to one another, with the physical activity equally affecting all of them. The role of physical activity has to date been most frequently and thoroughly studied in the context of physical and motor development, while the development of social competences and academic performance remain from research viewpoint more undertreated. Our research project focuses on children in developmental period of late childhood (9-12 years of age). The set of research hypotheses was tested by an empirical quantitative study based on a survey research design and a representative sample of 1658 Slovene children of 4th, 5th and 6th graders from the 16 Slovenian primary schools (Mean age=10.4). The physical activity and sedentary behaviour of the children were measured with a self-reported questionnaire (frequency, form and contents of the activities). In the framework of social development, behavioural problems and academic achievements were collected and analysed the data through the Social Skills Rating System (SSRS) standardized questionnaire (Gresham and Elliott, 1990). The data were analysed by univariate and multivariate statistical methods. The purpose of our study is to analysed the characteristics of physical activity by frequency, form and content and their relations with individual social skills, problem behaviour and academic achievement among school children of 9 to 12 years of age.
