Introduction
How do we make sense of lived experiences? How do culture and social interactions influence this process? Currently, my research explores how people construct the meaning of intimate partner violence and how that may influence the way victims/survivors recognize violence in their lives and seek help. As a teacher, I want to help students take psychological theories and apply them to real life cases and experiences. Fun fact: I love cooking new dishes. I also sing to my cats every day.

Racial microaggressions are subtle statements or behaviors, whether intentional or unintentional, which communicate hostile or denigrating messages towards people of color. Previous racial microaggression research tends to focus exclusively on monoracial people of color, without examining experiences from multiracial persons. In Study 1 (N = 262),...
In this mixed methods study of 56 entry-level pimps in Harlem, NY, we explore how pimps’ choices to use violence or control differ by where they are selling sex, who their clientele are, and whether these violent and controlling behaviors yield higher returns. First, we qualitatively explore how pimps account for each of these choices, and how each...
This psychometric synthesis reviewed all 29 articles meeting criteria and possessing psychometric results from the 20-year history (1997 to 2017) of the Highly Sensitive Person Scale (ITSPS). Aggregated internal consistency (coefficient alpha) was .874. Convergent comparisons were provided between the PISPS total score and 12 measures of constructs...
The data on violence against disabled people are scarce. The data on prevalence that does exist is staggering, however: disabled people make up one third to one half of all people killed by law enforcement and experience twice the rate of violence that others do. To study the relationships among ableism, violence, and disability as an intersectiona...
Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women is a global public health problem. Conceptual frameworks suggest misperceived norms around IPV might drive perpetration of violence against women in southern and eastern Africa. We conducted a cross-sectional, population-based survey of all men residing in a rural parish in southwest Uganda, eliciting t...
This study expanded previous psychometric analyses to include gender and race using measurement invariance with the Counseling Center Assessment of Psychological Symptoms (CCAPS-34) on a large sample (n = 4,013) of students referred to a university counseling center. Internal consistency was demonstrated for all subscales with all αs and ωs ≥ .80....
The Social Justice Scale (SJS) and various subscales were studied on a sample of 414 human services university undergraduates. Internal consistency (α = .93), discriminant validity, and response bias were adequate. the 4-factor model demonstrated an excellent fit. Implications were discussed for use of the SJS in practice and research.
This study explored the psychometric characteristics of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) on a sample of 414 university undergraduate students (M age = 19.07, SD = 0.95). Internal consistency (α = .83), external divergent validity, and internal structural validity were adequate; the 2-factor model provided the best fit to the da...
Recent research has shown a link between fairness in terms of school rules and discipline and negative student outcomes, including delinquency, violent behavior, and victimization. The current study examines how fairness at school impacts bullying victimization—operationalized as repeated physical, psychological, or verbal victimization—among high...
Important questions remain about the clinical and research utility of the Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) scale, particularly related to gender. Thus, a cluster analysis was conducted with 414 university undergraduates, using the HSP scale, the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale, and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale Revise...
Using a mixed-method approach, we explored how 85 sex market facilitators used neutralization and subcultural discourse to present themselves in the interview setting. We used non-metric, Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) to test discursive themes that resulted in a three-fold model with the themes ‘good,’’bad,’ and ‘badass me’ with externalizing and...
Responses to the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) scale displayed high score reliability (α = .91) and adequate convergent and divergent validity for college undergraduates. The data provided an adequate to excellent fit to the unidimensional model. Measurement invariance was demonstrated for gender and race.
This study explored internal consistency (α = .834), test-retest (rtt = .911), convergent validity, and internal structural validity of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) on a large university student sample. The 2-factor model fit the data best and measurement invariance was demonstrated for Latinx, but not undergraduate/graduat...
Analysis of CCAPS-34 scores on a large (n = 4,852) university counseling center student sample supported internal consistency (α = .803-.896), one-month test-retest reliability (rtt = .706–.829), convergent and divergent validity, and good model fit. Measurement invariance of scores for all categories of race and student status was supported.
Derald Wing Sue (1942–) is an American psychologist known for his extensive and highly influential research on Asian American psychology, multicultural counseling, racism, and microaggressions (APA, 2013; Munsey, 2006). Sue is the most commonly cited author of multicultural publications, and his research has been highly influential in national disc...

Pimp and sex worker business arrangements often originate in private social spheres. In sex markets, the overlap between work, leisure, and even family spheres can foster a complicated nexus between intimacy and economy. Zelizer (2000) explores the sociology of purchases of intimacy using three approaches: “hostile worlds”, “nothing-but”, and “conn...
Previous literature has found historically marginalized groups report more negative perceptions of the criminal justice system and lower levels of procedural justice, which then influences their mental health and their willingness to report crimes. While previous research on procedural justice has focused mostly on racial and ethnic minority groups...
Racial microaggressions are subtle forms of discrimination that have been found to have negative effects on the mental health of people of color. Due to the dearth of quantitative research that has examined the influence of racial microaggressions on Asian Americans, we recruited an Asian American sample (N = 157) for the current study to investiga...
Racial microaggressions are subtle (often unintentional or unconscious) forms of racial discrimination that negatively affect victims’ mental health. Utilizing an undergraduate student sample (N = 225), the current study examined the relationship between racial microaggressions and self-esteem. Results indicate that racial microaggressions negative...
This study illustrates the types of multiracial microaggressions, or subtle forms of discrimination toward multiracial people, that transpire in family settings. Utilizing a Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) Method and a Qualitative Secondary Analysis (QSA), multiracial participants (N = 9) were interviewed in three focus groups to describe the...
