Introduction
Juliana Braz Dias holds a doctorate in Social Anthropology from the University of Brasilia (2004), where she is an Associate Professor since 2008. She has conducted research on African Ethnology and Popular Culture, with fieldwork experience in Cape Verde and South Africa. Her research activities have resulted in publications on: music and carnival; the commodification of culture; ethnicization and creolization processes. She coordinates the studies group ECOA - Ethnology in African Contexts.

This research project focuses on two societies that emerged from the encounters that marked colonial experiences in the African continent: Cape Verde and South Africa. It addresses the contacts, exchanges and appropriations that took place in these two contexts, despite the logic of distinctions and hierarchies supported by colonial regimes and reproduced, to a large extent, in the post-colonial world. The project takes the domain of popular culture as a privileged locus for an investigation directed to the processes of creolization. More specifically, it addresses carnival festivities - Carnival of São Vicente, in Cape Verde, and Kaapse Klopse, in South Africa - as the events to be investigated, through ethnographic research, in order to trace the relationships, discourses, practices and values that inform the sense of “mixing” in these post-colonial contexts. The comparative nature of the project aims at highlighting the particularities of these two processes of creolization.
