Ambitious goals to combat pollution should be supported in policies that discourage the use of private cars, notably old and more polluting vehicles. Price signals, such as a congestion tax, and traffic restrictions, such as low-emission zones (LEZ), are widely used tools among European cities to limit car use. In this paper, we look at the dissuas...

Increasing concerns about sustainability and energy conservation, coupled with the proliferation of incentives in the EU to achieve energy savings, suggest that significant improvements in energy efficiency should be realized. A policy measure that should have a direct impact on energy savings is the replacement of incandescent and halogen light bu...

This paper proposes a model for short-term electricity load with differentiated temperature and daylight effects by time of day, which are determined by variations in intraday economic activity. The relationship between electricity load and economic activity implies that the electricity demand response to changes in exogenous variables like tempera...

We propose a model for short-term electricity load with differentiated temperature and daylight effects by time of day, which are determined by variations in intraday economic activity. The relationship between electricity load and economic activity implies that the time properties of the latter directly translate into the former. Our proposed fram...

The treatment of trend components in electricity demand is critical for long-term peak load forecasting. When forecasting high frequency variables, like daily or hourly loads, a typical problem is how to make long-term scenarios - regarding demographics, GDP growth, etc. - compatible with short-term projections. Traditional procedures that apply de...

Since 1990, Spain has had one of the highest elasticities of electricity demand in the European Union. We provide an in-depth analysis into the causes of this high elasticity, and we examine how these same causes influence electricity demand in other European countries. To this end, we present an index-decomposition analysis of growth in electricit...

We propose the use of a dual approach for modelling the saturation levels in the automobile market. We combine macro data coming from a pool of observations corresponding to the vehicle fleet and per capita income in a broad set of countries, with micro data coming from the Survey of Household Finances, elaborated by the Banco de España (Bank of Sp...

Proper planning for the dimensions of an electricity production and transmission system requires the availability of medium- and long-term electricity demand projections that are sufficiently reliable. Generally, these projections are directly linked to the estimated growth for the whole real GDP (gross domestic product), although an in-depth histo...

European countries currently have segmented labour markets with flexible but insecure –“flexirisky” – jobs, resulting in significant inequality between different categories of workers. Part‐time jobs are one example: their flexibility may help workers reconcile work and family life, and increase women's labour force participation, but part‐time emp...

The existence of a universal minimum wage has been, and continues to be, an intensely debated issue. On the one hand, the controversy surrounding a minimum wage appears to be partly justified because the effects of the introduction and increase of a minimum wage may differ greatly depending on the labour market structure. On the other, the current...

This paper studies the relation between labour market institutions and educational systems and how this relation may affect youth unemployment rates. By constructing a signalling model in which education can be used as a signal of workers’ unobserved productivity and firms face firing costs, we investigate how the structure of the educational syste...

The main consistent conclusions of the empirical literature about the effects of minimum wages are threefold. First, there exists evidence about the negative employment effects of minimum wages, notably for the least-skilled groups. Secondly, after an increase in minimum wage, the probability that a teenager leaves school also increases. And, third...

Interdependencies between European countries are well known and strongly documented, but this is not the case for the relations between European regions. This new ESPON project aims at providing a new understanding of the interrelations between Europe’s economies at the regional level. To achieve this goal, this research will use innovative methods to overcome data limitations on interregional linkages and flows of people, goods, capital, knowledge and services. The analysis of the relationships between regions will determine the extent to which the existence and the intensity of interregional flows are drivers for and/or barriers to the development of regional competitiveness and cohesion. The result shall be both a big picture of regional interdependencies and specific insights according to different identified situations (e.g. border regions, outermost regions, regional relations within countries, peripheral versus central regions…). The overall ambition is to provide a new frame of reference for supporting regional development policies and informing regional convergence. As an example, this should give regional and national policymakers useful understanding of the potential impacts of the European Green Deal. https://www.espon.eu/programme/projects/espon-2020/applied-research/interregional-relations-europe
