The purpose of this chapter is to situate the concept of the digital economy in a broader socio-economic context, facilitating both the understanding of mechanisms governing its evolution and making predictions about the character and dynamics of changes in the digital economy in the future. The study presents the concept of the digital economy and...
The economic literature focuses mostly on faster ageing of population among developed countries; however, many developing countries experience even more dramatic pace of this process. Mauritius, with the median age of population higher than the world average since 1990s, represents a prominent example of such a case. In this paper, we analyse demog...
The paper presents results of a descriptive analysis of income distributions as well as top
income inequality among women and men in Poland. The analysis is based on the dataset provided by the Council for Social Monitoring (2019). Throughout 2003–2015 their panel survey included, for example, a question on individual net monthly income in the past...
Changes in the size and the age structure of a population have a great impact on an economy, especially on national savings and capital flows. In this paper, we assess the effects of demographic processes on a small open economy exemplified by Poland. Poland's population, although still relatively young when compared to other developed countries, i...
Euro area countries are ageing, but demographic processes manifest some hetero-geneity. On the basis of a model proposed by Carvalho et al. (2016), calibrated for two core countries of the euro area, we estimate that in the long run demographic trends alone may account for as much as 0.7 percentage point difference between real interest rates in Fr...
Changes in the size and the age structure of a population have a great impact on an economy, especially on national savings and capital flows. Poland's population, although still relatively young when compared to other developed countries, is expected to experience accelerated ageing and decline in forthcoming decades. In this paper, we assess the...
Due to the complexity of relationships between innovations and income inequalities, the choice of measures to be taken in the course of their interaction is very important. This paper presents a regression analysis based on the selected measures of innovativeness (gross domestic expenditure on R&D, number of patent applications, the Creative Econom...
Summary: In this paper we investigate to what extent a standard overlapping generations
model with housing is able to replicate age profiles of households’ debt observed in
Poland. We show that a properly calibrated model matches both the fraction of indebted
households and the conditional mean value of their debts. We use the model to assess
distr...
Inflation expectations, both their median and dispersion, are of great importance to the effectiveness of monetary policy. The goal of this paper is to examine the impact of the global financial crisis on dispersion of inflation expectations in the European Union. Using European Commission’s survey data, we find that in the early phase of the crisi...
Drawing on the premise that the integration of economies revises people's social space and their comparators, we quantify social stress by aggregate relative deprivation, ARD; we calculate the effect of monetary mergers on ARD; and we document the validity of the superadditivity property of ARD for successive adoptions of a common currency by Europ...
Many economic phenomena, including flows of money, can be treated as manifestations of operation of specific networks. In contrast to the popularity of analyses of network structure and dynamics in sociology and physics, economic investigations concerning network approach in general and network properties of money in particular have not been popula...
The concept of nonneutrality of money is one of the most controversial concepts in the economic theory. Existing theories demonstrate that money is neutral (purely monetary phenomena do not yield real outcomes), but they are based upon assumptions that are unacceptable from the point of view of the complexity of social reality. Rejection of the ass...
Mainstream economics tends to perceive economic systems in a mechanistic way, which makes it impossible to grasp the notion of the irreversibility of real economic processes and thus encourages referring to the achievements of thermodynamics. Although economic equivalents of thermodynamic quantities have been discussed for more than a hundred years...
It is argued that even if economic growth and protection of the environment are not always compatible, they are not necessarily exclusive, which is emphasized by many findings, especially by the hypothesis of Environmental Kuznets' Curve. However, it is not the mechanism of Environmental Kuznets' Curve that automatically reduces the concentration o...

As noted by Stiglitz (2000), information economics is expected to explain in detail “how and how well organizations and societies absorb new information, learn, adapt their behavior, and even their structures; and how different economic and organizational designs affect the ability to create, transmit, absorb, and use knowledge and information.” This Companion aims to address these issues by providing relevant theoretical framework and the latest empirical findings on the role of information in the economy and by discussing perspectives of information economics.
The aim of the conference is to bring together academic researchers to celebrate the International Women’s Day by promoting pluralism in economics, finance and management. The conference is open for submissions both from female and male researchers interested in orthodox and heterodox approaches in their fields. Details: https://www.ue.katowice.pl/conference-iwd.
