After two decades of meagre results in post-Soviet regionalism, the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is the first gleam of hope. However, research on the EAEU is mostly Russia-centred and focused on trade issues, which leaves the small states’ perspectives and developmental aspects, such as the EAEU’s industrial cooperation agenda, understudied. The...

While during ‘old’ or ‘closed’ regionalism, lasting approximately from 1950 to 1980, several regional integration projects practised a common industrial policy, in the period of ‘new’ or ‘open’ regionalism, starting in the late 1980s, market failure correcting horizontal industrial policy started to largely replace selective industrial policy, and...

Liberal globalism has reached its limits in the context of the climate and corona crisis. Criticism of globalization comes increasingly from the right. As a counter-model, these actors present the return to a capitalism with a nationalistic character, in which (selective) trade regulation to strengthen one's own market positioning (competitiveness)...

The European automotive industry is undergoing deep structural transformations. In addition to the twin challenge of mastering the digital and ecological transition, it has to deal with the effects of the COVID-19 containment measures. All these changes are taking place within highly globalised value chains that have resulted from excessive offshor...

The impact of the global financial crisis of 2007ff. led peripheral communities in the USA and in the UK such as Cleveland and Preston to question their unsustainable, outward-oriented and socially excluding development model. As a consequence, they adopted Community Wealth Building (CWB) as a new and fundamentally different local development strat...

Since the global economic and financial crisis, industrial policy has enjoyed a stunning revival. In the face of the structural imbalances in the European Union, different sides have proposed industrial policy as a way to overcome the crisis and to reduce unequal development. Left forces elaborated concepts of ‘progressive’ industrial policy, mainl...

The EU’s descent into a state of crisis has prompted several calls for its transformation. The problem is that these suggestions are often very vague. The aim of this chapter is to provide ideas for how a different kind of intergovernmental cooperation might be conceived. They are not intended as ready-made counter-proposals, but are to be taken as...

Project
This project studies different historic and present experiences of promoting joint industrial policy initiatives among different nation states. The focus lies on semi-peripheral regions that have sought (and keep seeking) to foster catch-up development through these initiatives. More specifically, the research concentrates on the political economy of regional integration, that is, on how the specific linkage of economic structures and social actors shapes the industrial policy outcomes of a region.
Project
This project deals with the fundamentals and implications of progressive industrial policy formulation and implementation. It debates questions such as which features do actually make industrial policy progressive, what the appropriate spatial levels for implementation are, and which actors need to be involved on what terms.
