Introduction
My research interests include the design and implementation of web based information systems with state-of-the-art technologies. I have particular experience with the design of distributed systems handling large-scale databases for automated manufacturing systems and modern architectures for task-oriented systems with a service- and event-based approach based on semantic technologies. I was involved in several FP7 projects like PESCaDO, TRIDEC and SAFEWATER and now in the H2020 interdisciplinary project HERACLES and beAWARE leading system architecture and development work packages.

Crisis management is a challenging and interdisciplinary task in which various information must be acquired and fused. In Germany, Civil Crisis Management is usually organized into two parts: the organizational‐administrative division and the operative‐tactical division, which are subordinate to the authorities (political) leadership. To organize a...
The crisis management cycle contains the step Preparedness, in which the development of disaster plans takes place. Run plans for fire fighters are a well-established means for enhancing preparedness in public buildings. A wide array of plans is available, serving to aid firefighters in swiftly orienting themselves during emergency situations on-si...
Protecting and preserving cultural heritage (CH) in view of global climate change is the main objective of the KERES project. For managing climate impact with proper measurements, including prevention and responsive actions, an ontology has been devised in the course of this project in close cooperation with relevant stakeholders of selected CH ass...
According to the final report of the European Union OMC expert group on strengthening cultural heritage resilience for anthropogenic climate change, the impacts of climate change, particularly extreme weather events, on cultural heritage in Europe have become increasingly evident in recent years and are progressing at an unprecedented speed and sca...
Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications are being used more and more frequently. Data collected by various sensors can be used to provide innovative digital services supporting increasing efficiency or cost reduction. The implementation of such applications requires the integration and analysis of heterogeneous data coming from a broad va...
Recently, the usage of triplestores has increased in complex computer systems. Traditionally, they are used for representing static knowledge. In the last years, systems started using semantic triplestores in highly dynamic scenarios, e.g., in the context of civil protection. In these use cases, performance characteristics are more and more importa...
In many application domains sensor data contributes an important part to the situation awareness required for decision making. Examples range from environmental and climate change situations to industrial production processes. All these fields need to aggregate and fuse many data sources, the semantics of the data needs to be understood and the res...

climate change impact, represent significant threats to
European Cultural Heritage (CH) assets. In Europe, the huge
number and diversity of CH assets, together with the different
climatological sub-regions aspects, as well as the different
adaptation policies to climate change adopted (or t...
In crisis management, it is crucial to have up-to-date data available to assess an ongoing situation correctly. This information originates from different sources, such as human observations, various sensors or simulation algorithms with heterogeneous geographic scope. The aggregation of such data is conducted by decision support systems to disburd...
In a natural disaster situation, it is crucial to orchestrate an efficient response, which prevents, or - at least - mitigates damages. Based on the assumption, that a well-informed decision maker can make the best decisions, s/he should have access to all available information. Thus, employing both internal and external data empowers decision make...
In every emergency, getting up-to-date information about the current situation is crucial to orchestrate an efficient response. Since the Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly growing with an estimated number of 30 billion sensor in 2020, it offers excellent potential to collect information and to improve situational awareness. Yet, the IoT brings se...
For emergency management agencies, information retrieval is of particular importance since it is crucial for decision-making and the gain of situational awareness during a crisis. Many different data sources are available for the usage in the context of crisis management like for example weather forecasts, sensor data, historical context informatio...
Understanding the current situation is critical in every natural disaster or crisis. Therefore, there is a need for accurate and up-to-date information about the scope, extent and impact of a disaster. The basis for this information is data that is available through a variety of sensors. Decision Support Systems (DSSs) support decision makers in di...

Environmental factors, worsened by the increasing climate change impact, represent significant threats to European Cultural Heritage (CH) assets. In Europe, the huge number and diversity of CH assets, together with the different climatological sub-regions aspects, as well as the different adaptation policies to climate change adopted (or to be adop...
Climate conditions are expected to change worldwide. This includes an increase in intensity and frequency of (among others) extreme weather events. As a result, flooding, droughts, fires, etc. will become more common in the future. No matter the cause and kind, all major disasters require an immediate, comprehensive, and professional response. Majo...
In every disaster time is the enemy and getting accurate and helpful real-time information for supporting decision support is critical. Data sources for Risk Management Platforms are heterogeneous. This includes data coming from several resources: sensors, social media, the general public and first responders. All this data needs to be analyzed, ag...
Cultural Heritage (CH) assets are endangered by climate change (CC) and natural hazards. In Europe, their huge number and diversity, together with the different climatic sub-regions generate a complex scenario. Experts from many domains need to cooperate towards their conservation goals. Same scientific and technological terms with clear relationsh...

Natural Language Generation (NLG) from knowledge bases (KBs) has repeatedly been subject of research. Howev-er, most proposals tend to have in common that they start from KBs of limited size that either already contain lin-guistically-oriented knowledge structures or to whose structures different ways of realization are explicitly assigned. To avoi...
