The cost-optimal pathway for moving from the current fossil-fuel based energy system to 100% renewables is still an open question. This work presents the first study that analyses the transition towards a 100% renewable energy system under different spatial resolutions (1-node, 6-nodes electrically isolated and interconnected) and various coupling...
Although, in general, there is a high level of public acceptance of renewable energies (RE) in Spain, at a local scale, protests and campaigns against RE projects are becoming increasingly frequent. In order to identify the factors that most influence the acceptance/rejection of renewable electricity generation technologies (photo-voltaic, wind and...
Floating photovoltaic systems (FPV) can be a more sustainable alternative for the energy transition than ground-mounted photovoltaic systems, as they avoid occupying useable land and the power generation is more distributed. This paper presents the first study that calculates the FPV technical potential at the province/municipality level, focusing...
This paper is a commentary on ‘Decarbonizing the Chilean Electric Power System: A Prospective Analysis of Alternative Carbon Emissions Policies’ –an article published by Babonneau et al. in the Energies Journal. On the one hand, our aim is to point out and discuss some issues detected in the article regarding the literature review, modelling method...
Europe and North America have numerous studies on 100% renewable power systems. South America, however, lacks research on zero-carbon energy systems, especially understanding South America as an interconnected region, despite its great renewable energy sources, increasing population, and economic productivity.
This work extends the cost-optimizatio...
The progress made in the penetration of renewable energy (RE) sources in most parts of the world is not fast enough for achieving the international climate mitigation targets. Furthermore, there is a lack of energy planning strategies, methods and tools for assessing the implementation of RE technologies which considers the social support. In this...

This document seeks to contribute to society and its decision-makers with the best available scientific evidence on Chile’s Renewable Energy (RE) Export Potential and the opportunities and challenges that such potential opens for Chile’s commitment to carbon neutrality. It also aims to provide a useful input for the dialogues that the country will...
The aim of this research is to analyse the impact of renewable energy (RE) technologies and sector coupling via analysing the transition pathways towards a sustainable energy system in Chile. Four energy transition scenarios for the power, heat, transport and desalination sectors were assessed using the LUT Energy System Transition model. The curre...
Driven by climate mitigation goals countries around the world are prioritising low-cost renewables for economic growth and recovery from the aftermath of the global pandemic. It is quite clear that sustainable technology choices result in broader socioeconomic benefits, as is shown by countries that have been early movers in transitioning their ene...
A growing photovoltaic industry shows exponential deployment worldwide, and it is expected to largely contribute to the energy transition. Because PV technologies will play a major role in achieving global sustainable development and climate goals, driving more energy-efficient scenarios will require efficient approaches to evaluate systems, especi...
Photovoltaic (PV) prosumers can play a significant role in the transition toward sustainable cities. However, the implementation of more effective policies which accelerate the deployment of this market is needed. In this study, after an overview of the residential PV prosumer (RPVP) market's status in Chile, critical parameters that can speed-up t...
This is a corrigendum to the article Transition toward a fully renewable-based energy system in Chile by 2050 across power, heat, transport and desalination sectors published by the International Journal of Sustainable Energy Planning and Management with DOI: http://doi.org/10.5278/ijsepm.3385
Despite the fact that some renewable energy (RE) technologies are already techno-economically viable, the high spatial dilution nature of their sources, together with aspects beyond the techno-economic ones (such as environmental, social, cultural, and other aspects), can become strong constraints and barriers when it comes to their integration int...
Short communication: “Spatial Energy Planning: A Review”. At the 5th Renewable Energy Sources – Research and Business (RESRB) conference. Brussels, Belgium. 09/2020.
Renewable energies will play a significant role in transitioning towards sustainable energy system in order to match the goal under the Paris Agreement. However, to achieve this goal, it will be necessary to find the best country pathway, with global repercussions. This study reveals that an energy system based on 100% renewable resources in Chile...
This study reveals that an energy system based on 100% renewable resources in Chile could be technically feasible and even more cost-efficient than the current system. Moreover, the Chilean energy system in 2050 would emit zero greenhouse gases. Additionally, Chile would become a country free of energy imports.

Chile has a law of distributed generation that came into effect in October 2014. Nevertheless, in the Aysén Region, which has solar resources similar to other areas with higher installation ratios, the first grid-connected photovoltaic system under this law was installed two years after it was enacted. In order to analyse the existing barriers to t...
This study presents a descriptive analysis, from a technical perspective, of a rural electrification project managed by sub-national government entities in developing countries. It was conducted through a case study applied to a project involving 26 energy access solutions implemented through photovoltaic technology. The analysis is based on inform...
The Aysén Region is an area separated from the rest of Chile. It is a territory with isolation conditions and composed of 32 human settlements and with people in a situation of extreme rurality. For this reason, the government have invested and continues spending large amounts of money for funding different strategies to electrify the most remote c...

The poster describes a pilot project for education and awareness of residential electrical energy efficiency that was conducted in five homes in the city of Coyhaique, Aysén Region, Patagonia, Chile.
It consists mainly of explaining the method applied and the results that were obtained. The most interesting part of this experience was the fact tha...
