Project
The purpose of this project is to explore, study and share information about the benthic biodiversity of the Patagonian Atlantic underwater landscape, which remains largely unexplored. This project is part of Gonzalo Bravo PhD and will include one of the largest diving surveys in Argentina using innovative methods as time-lapse photography, ROV dives, drop-video and underwater mapping. We will study the biodiversity of Patagonian rocky reefs habitats between 10 m and 40 m depth and no farther than 3 km from the coastline, across approximately 3500 km of the SW Atlantic coastline passing through two biogeographic provinces (Argentinian and Magellanic). Underwater photo-quadrats along transects will be used to estimate species richness, abundance and species composition. This methodology allows us to get a wide sampling area and cover many rocky reefs along the coast using short dive surveys. Understanding the present state of local and regional benthic biodiversity in these seldom studied areas is critical to ensure the health of the rocky reefs and to detect future changes in species composition. The results of this study will advance the description of rocky reef new species as some of these habitats have never been explored yet and help to conserve these ecosystems which provide important ecosystem services.
