Introduction
Juan Javier del Granado is a research fellow at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México's Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas. His scholarly research agenda explores the design of private law institutions. In this line, his most recent book is a newly-minted civil code from a law and economics perspective. Other recent projects include infusing law and economics into the classroom at Universidad Francisco Marroquín in Guatemala City and Escuela Libre de Derecho in Mexico City, as well as organizing, at his home institution, a program of study in United States law, marking only the second time an American law curriculum is set up outside of the United States after Peking University's School of Transnational Law in Shenzhen, China.

This short law and economics work offers a sustained focus on two disparate foundations for Western European legal arrangements: one grounded in Roman law and the other based on the common law.
Instead of comparing, as modern business scholars have done, the efficiency of the common law with the present-day civil law, with its own inefficiencies,...
I present a nuanced analysis of Ramón López Velarde and Javier del Granado, literary figures of the Mexican and Bolivian revolutions, respectively. This study delves into their unique synthesis of fervent Catholicism with revolutionary nationalism. I position both poets not merely as symbolic embodiments of their respective revolutionary movements,...
Under the general assumptions of democratic theory, legislatures have positive legitimacy to make law because of the power of the people who elected them. Throughout the world, however, unelected judges also make law. What, if anything, gives such judges positive legitimacy to make law? This paper demonstrates, through two superficially simple game...
A new-generation law and economics civil code is presented as a conscious project to restate Roman law's usefulness for coping with today's problems. Through law and economics, Roman law will renew itself. As a paradigmatic private-law system, Roman law is eminently amenable to a state-of-the-art fusion with law and economics. Sensitivity to what d...
Legislatures have positive legitimacy to make law because of the power of the people who elected them. Throughout the world, however, unelected judges also make law. What, if anything, gives such judges positive legitimacy to make law? This paper demonstrates, through two superficially simple game-theoretic examples, that judges' positive legitimac...
Law and economics aids us in understanding why Roman law is still worthy of admiration and emulation. The admirable character of Roman law is its quality as an (almost) paradigmatic private law system. My discussion of Roman law illustrates how private law can align incentives for people to exert efforts to optimize investment and share information...
Nothing excites civilian lawyers and judges more than commissions for codification. Codification is more than an academic enterprise. Codification projects directly cut across the interface between law and life. ALACDE intends to harness this Latin American interest in codification to bring the economic approach to Latin America. A new-generation l...
