This project aims to study the extraction process of natural compounds (e.g., phytochemicals), which exhibit therapeutic (e.g., anticancer) properties found in Nicaragua’s tropical plants. This study is focused on obtaining said natural compounds with a minimum loss of biological activity by varying extraction conditions, such as temperature, pressure, and solvent, amongst others. Furthermore, said natural compounds may also be used as food and pharmaceutical additives.

The goal of this project is to study the extraction process of phytochemicals that exhibit anticancer properties, which are found in several plants cultivated in Nicaragua. Morinda citrifolia, Annona muricata, Cymbopogon citratus and Curcuma longa, amongst others, contain compounds that exhibit chemical activity against tumour cells or cancer precursors. The extraction process will be studied to obtain the active principles with the minimum loss of biological activity by varying extraction conditions, such as temperature, pressure, solvent, equipment, and the like.
