In this study, an antioxidant-rich extract was obtained by leaching Moringa oleifera leaves. The activity of the extract against the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical was measured by determining a second-order rate constant (k2). The reaction between the mixture of antioxidants in the extract and the DPPH was monitored by measuring...
Food antioxidants are important for human nutrition, decreasing oxidative damage to lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids induced by free radicals. Moringa oleifera Lam. is an important source of natural antioxidants. In this work, an antioxidant-rich extract was obtained by lixiviation of Moringa leaves, and its activity against the free radical 2,2...
In this study, a mathematical model to simulate the drying of shelled corn in a continuous plug-flow fluidised bed dryer is presented. Equipment and material models were applied to describe the process. The equipment model was based on the differential equations obtained by applying mass and energy balances to each element of the dryer. In the case...
Moringa oleifera is a plant containing many nutrients that are mostly concentrated within the leaves. Commonly, the separation process of these nutrients involves solid-liquid extraction followed by evaporation and drying to obtain a concentrated extract, which is rich in proteins, vitamins, carbohydrates, and other essential nutrients that can be...
Noni (Morinda citrifolia) roots are a good source of anthraquinones, such as damnacanthal, nordamnacanthal and morindone, which have demonstrated in vitro cytotoxic and antitumor activity. In this work, the inhibitory properties of anthraquinones contained in Noni root extracts against styrene free-radical bulk polymerization were studied. The extr...
I'm considering the use of the DPPH method in my thesis due to its relative simplicity and low cost.
This project aims to study the extraction process of natural compounds (e.g., phytochemicals), which exhibit therapeutic (e.g., anticancer) properties found in Nicaragua’s tropical plants. This study is focused on obtaining said natural compounds with a minimum loss of biological activity by varying extraction conditions, such as temperature, pressure, and solvent, amongst others. Furthermore, said natural compounds may also be used as food and pharmaceutical additives.
Drying of foodstuffs, evaporation, modelling and simulation of drying processes, environmental engineering, and materials science.
The goal of this project is to study the extraction process of phytochemicals that exhibit anticancer properties, which are found in several plants cultivated in Nicaragua. Morinda citrifolia, Annona muricata, Cymbopogon citratus and Curcuma longa, amongst others, contain compounds that exhibit chemical activity against tumour cells or cancer precursors. The extraction process will be studied to obtain the active principles with the minimum loss of biological activity by varying extraction conditions, such as temperature, pressure, solvent, equipment, and the like.
