Conference Paper
CIMMs (Computer Integrated Manufacturing systems) are important systems for overall automation of manufacturing enterprises, especially big ones. The general issues of the computer system topology were analyzed earlier. The present case study concerns the detailed design of the optimum LAN for the CIMMs sphere, based on the actual data for a big Po...
Conference Paper
The paper presents some unethical methods and procedures employed by the technology providers in the technology transfer process in the case study country after 1989 and the basic effects in the Domain. The history of the most successful leading designer is depicted and his procedures and methods to counteract the unethical aspects are described. S...
Conference Paper
The paper presents some methods of design and development of emerging/pioneering automation and ICT systems, that proved to be very successful in Poland before the political change in 1989 in that country. The methods should be affective also in other countries in similar unethical political conditions. Some comments are also given by coauthors of...
Conference Paper
The present paper discusses the social and political aspects of the technology change and transfer in the domain of automation and ICT during the pioneering era in Poland (the case-study country). The paper presents some of the projects led by an exemplary leading designer who has led successfully a dozen or so significant projects (in comparison t...

CIMMs (Computer Integrated Manufacturing systems) are important systems for overall automation of manufacturing enterprises, especially big ones. The general issues of the computer system topology were analyzed earlier. The present case study concerns the detailed design of the optimum LAN for the managerial sphere, based on the actual data for a b...
Article
The primary health care nurses have a very important role to play in prophylaxis and treatment of diabetes. But this need rather fast training of ca. 20000 nurses in diabetes problems in Poland. This, in fact, implies application of the distant learning methods on the scale of the overall country. Prior initiating a project of a ubiquitous system o...
Article
An approach to development of pioneering Information and Communication Technology large-scale industrial enterprise integration technology is described for a case study of Computer Integrated Manufacturing and Management systems (CIMMs). The paper presents some experience in large-scale systems and the current state of art for the domain. A feasibl...
Conference Paper
Before the political change in the Case-study country of Poland, the system governing there encouraged unethical behaviour or even forced it. The paper discusses the most frequent methods used by the unethical power to force the actual pioneers of ICT and automation in the case study country to abandon performing their professions. The example of t...
Conference Paper
The present paper discusses the problems of costs of the technology change and transfer in the domain of automation and ICT in a rather poorly developed country. The costs that had to be paid by the leading designers of large-scale projects are the basic concern. The paper presents some of the projects led by a single leading designer and the costs...
Conference Paper
The Lower Silesia, in particular Wroclaw, is the ex-capital city of Polish ICT and Automation. Therefore, the technology proliferation and transfer processes have been more much more advanced and easy for observation there than in other areas. The paper presents the basic working conditions of the actual Polish ICT Automation pioneers and technolog...
Conference Paper
There is no commonly accepted approach to selection of a topology of a computer integrated manufacturing and/or management system. The basic decisions are undertaken basing on the liking of some available hardware, without any consideration paid to any characteristics of the topology. The paper proposes selection of the topology basing on the syste...
Conference Paper
an>The problem of the data acquisition/control system topology for distributed control systems in big power plants and/or power distribution centres is usually solved in a rather arbitrary way. The paper presents some reasonable approached based of evaluation of the system robustness, using the µ function as the measure or robustness. The paper pro...
Conference Paper
The design and implementation team of computer automation systems for the Polish power industry faced many difficult problems connected with the lack of experience in this domain in the country. Another kind of problems was implied by different levels of information and communication technology in that country and in well developed ones. The differ...

On the IFAC workshop in Budapest, there presented two general designs of similar system: Badel — a data base for a coal fired power plant (Lewoc et al., 1989) and PRIMO/S a data base for a nuclear power plant (Stegbaurer, 1989). Both systems are big enough to produce symptoms characteristic to complex automation systems of major cultutral aspects....
Article
The paper presents formal simulation models for end-to-end network performance studies. A summary of results obtained when investigating the MSK network and validating the throughput assessment method is presented.
Article
The paper presents the model of an internal measuring tool developed basing on experience gained for the version implemented in the Interuniversity Computer Network in Poland. The model operates on network loops similar to those used in the throughput assessment method and was used to validate the method.
Article
An example of an ad hoc measuring experiment run on the R-32 computer (IBM series/360 compatible) is presented. The results obtained show that frequently, simple experiments may give much more useful information on computer network performance than many years of complex research work.
Article
This paper is the second of a series devoted to comparison of the round-trip delay in the local area networks Ethernet and Cambridge Ring. It presents some assessment of the round-trip delay for the local network Ethernet and comparison of the results with those obtained via the way of simulation. The paper depicts an analytical model for assessmen...
Article
The paper presents an X.25 network simulator developed in order to check our approximate analytical model of computer networks. The simulator models only the necessary subset of protocols to minimize simulation time. The mean throughput and the maximum round-trip delay for individual calls are monitored. Optionally, round-trip delay histograms may...
Article
Economic considerations are the primary limitation for application of computers in psychiatry in Poland. An economical approach has been developed and used to establish two databases for psychiatric studies. The first, BAZA 295, was established for epidemiological studies of schizophrenia; the other is intended for mortality studies. The authors de...
Article
The paper presents analytical round-trip delay evaluation method for two local area networks: Ethernet and Cambridge Ring. Data used for the evaluation are free of errors of the simulation studies by G. S. Blair and D. Shepherd and the results reflect actual behavior of both networks in conditions assumed in the simulation studies.
Article
The major disadvantage of most analytical methods for queuing network studies is that assumptions are not valid for properly designed computer networks. For exponential thinking times and deterministic transmission and service times, in particular, an approach is proposed for approximate evaluation of mean cycle time i. e. reciprocal of delivered t...
Article
The intensive node testing system Sitwa developed for MSK network enables performance measurements both in normal operating conditions and at artificial load producing more intensive global traffic. The paper outlines some investigations performed on MSK configurations operating at 2400 bps. Characteristics and measures of computer networks are dis...
Article
The paper discusses an approach to performance comparison of local area networks Ethernet and Cambridge Data Ring presented in a paper titled 'A Performance Comparison of Ethernet and the Cambridge Communication Data Ring' by G. J. Blaigh and D. Shephard. An approach consisting of studying mean values only and considering conditions not occurring i...
Chapter
In Poland, several hospital information systems have been developed or are in progres. They are oriented towards solutions of specific fragmentary problems and developed on various home and imported hardware. This way is not preferable for a country in a down economy period and in 1984 a project was initiated for development of a reproducible compl...
