The paper presents formal simulation models for end-to-end network performance studies. A summary of results obtained when investigating the MSK network and validating the throughput assessment method is presented.

The paper presents the model of an internal measuring tool developed basing on experience gained for the version implemented in the Interuniversity Computer Network in Poland. The model operates on network loops similar to those used in the throughput assessment method and was used to validate the method.

An example of an ad hoc measuring experiment run on the R-32 computer (IBM series/360 compatible) is presented. The results obtained show that frequently, simple experiments may give much more useful information on computer network performance than many years of complex research work.
