Biodiversity stores information on the origin and evolution of life and can bear answers for many problems humanity faces. Although climate change threatens biodiversity worldwide, overwhelming evidence is continuously contested by obscurantist politics, and its effects on the megadiverse Neotropics are largely understudied. The search for adaption due to climate change selective pressures is an enduring puzzling evolutionary question. In our project we use innovative approaches integrating ecological, molecular and environmental tools to investigate possible responses to climate change of natural lizards populations (highly dependent of local temperatures) from threatened mosaics along the Amazon-Cerrado gradient. We use phenotypic parameters of thermal capacities and demography from genomic sequence data to infer likelihoods of species go through range shifts to track down favorable climates, adjust to new conditions via evolutionary adaptation, or become locally extinct.
