Information technology usage has positive aspects, but it has been acknowledged that there also exist negative ones that must be studied in more depth. Behaviors such as teasing and abusing are a main concern for online community leaders. Indeed, they recurrently use the words “toxic” and “poison” to qualify behaviors threatening their communities’...

Background: EMR system can provide three main types of benefits: it can solve the logistical organization problems associated with paper systems; it can improve the quality of professionals' clinical decisions; and it can improve physicians' return on their practices by reducing the cost of managing clinical information. According to the 2012 Comm...

Open source software (OSS) is an important trend in the information technology adoption landscape. It has received considerable attention in the scientific literature, but mostly in the professional press. In fact, there is much debate over its actual commercial and organizational value. Since the public discourse accompanying an IT may influence a...
Article
Purpose: Open source software (OSS) adoption and use in health care organizations (HCOs) is relatively low in developed countries, but several contextual factors have recently encouraged the consideration of the possible role of OSS in information technology (IT) application portfolios. This article aims at developing a research model for investig...

About 20 years ago, Markus and Robey noted that most research on IT impacts had been guided by deterministic perspectives and had neglected to use an emergent perspective, which could account for contradictory findings. They further observed that most research in this area had been carried out using variance theories at the expense of process theor...

After decades of slow diffusion, the acceptance of telework has dramatically accelerated during the pandemic crisis, becoming a mainstream work practice. However, little is still known on the impact of telework design on employee stress, particularly when stress is high due to a major health crisis, at a time when it is crucial that organizations h...

The gig-economy literature is rife with conflicting accounts of autonomy and empowerment versus exploitation and marginalization. To understand such contradictions, it is necessary to measure perceptions of algorithmic autonomy-support (PAAS); yet no validated instruments exist. To address this gap, we develop a theoretically-based measure for PAAS...
Conference Paper
Full-text available
Platform workers’ autonomy and agency are recurring themes in the study of the gig-economy where narratives purporting workers’ autonomy and empowerment conflict with those alleging the control and marginalization of workers. While it has been said that promoting workers’ agency can threaten the valuation of platform-based companies, the benefits o...

The covid-19 pandemic crisis presents unprecedented challenges and has profound implications for the way people live and work. Information and communication technologies have been playing a crucial role in ensuring business continuity as lockdown measures have suddenly forced employees from across the globe to telework, often leaving them unprepare...

Design thinking (DT) has found its way into software engineering, promising better requirements elicitation, customer relations, and cohesion within the development team. We report on Proaction Technologies' migration toward DT and evaluate the process through interviews with employees and clients.

This study investigates the legitimation strategies adopted by information technology (IT) vendors and their respective influence on market share. We conducted an analysis of the public discourse on websites of top Electronic Medical Record (EMR) vendors in Ontario, Canada. A total of 815 segments extracted from these websites were analyzed. Our fi...

Background: Laboratory testing occupies a prominent place in health care. Information technology systems have the potential to empower laboratory experts and to enhance the interpretation of test results in order to better support physicians in their quest for better and safer patient care. This study sought to develop a better understanding of wh...

Free/open source software users were previously responsible for managing the challenges associated with their software themselves. Recently, a new generation of entrepreneurs seized this emerging market opportunity by positioning themselves as service providers for free/open source software users. Conceptualizing such providers as “institutional en...

Purpose High-quality employee motivation can contribute to an organization’s long-term success by supporting employees’ well-being and performance. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of research concerning how organizations motivate workers in non-traditional work contexts. In the algocratic context of the gig-economy, the purpose of this paper is t...

Managing large-scale development projects in open source software ecosystems involves dealing with an array of technical and social problems. To disentangle the causes of such problems, we interviewed experts and performed a cause-and-effect analysis. Our findings demonstrate that loss of contributors is the most important social problem, while poo...

Abstract: Unprecedented developments in information technology have led to the virtualization of the workplace and driven exceptional growth in non-traditional work arrangements. One such example is the emergent gig-economy – a labor market characterized by temporary positions and organizations that contract with independent workers for short-term...

Introduction: Laboratory testing in primary care is a fundamental process that supports patient management and care. Any breakdown in the process may alter clinical information gathering and decision-making activities and can lead to medical errors and potential adverse outcomes for patients. Various information technologies are being used in prim...

Background: The accessibility of laboratory test results is crucial to the performance of emergency departments and to the safety of patients. This study aims to develop a better understanding of which laboratory information exchange (LIE) systems emergency care physicians (ECPs) are using to consult their patients' laboratory test results and whi...

Background There has been indisputable growth in adoption of electronic medical record (EMR) systems in the recent years. However, physicians’ progress in using these systems has stagnated when measured with maturity scales. While this so-called ceiling effect has been observed and its consequences described in previous studies, there is a paucity...

In this standalone cumulative literature review, we look at how the relationship between organizational readiness and business-IT alignment is depicted in the literature in the context of IT-based change. We show that more rigorous definitions of those two concepts are needed and that there are different views on the direction of the relationship b...

Background Numerous calls have been made for greater assimilation of information technology in healthcare organizations in general, and in primary care settings in particular. Considering the levels of IT investment and adoption in primary care medical practices, a deeper understanding is needed of the factors leading to greater performance outcome...

In this study we sought to better understand how EMR systems are actually being used by family physicians and what they perceive to be the performance outcomes for themselves and their medical practices. To achieve our objectives, we conducted a survey of family physicians in Quebec, Canada and obtained responses from 780 physicians. Key findings r...

The use of computerized personal health record (CPHR) is still rare in the population. Research shows a gap between what potential users need and what current CPHR systems offer. We propose a new "multi-level collective" conceptualization for the CPHR which has the potential to lead to the creation of a CPHR that better meets the needs and preferen...

Electronic Health Records (EHRs) are at the heart of most health system reforms. As an increasing number of hospitals are adopting open source EHRs and as many questions are still unanswered for potential adopters of open source EHRs, analyzing the governance of such systems has become important. Due to the increased diversity of sponsors and stake...

Almost a decade ago, researchers in information systems and analysts of the information technology (IT) industry were predicting a bright future for open source software (OSS). Recent examples appear to lend support to this, but there exist many detractors of OSS and resistance to the transformation it creates. Thus, it is relevant to take a closer...

No research to date has attempted to assess the extent to which Markus and Robey's (1988) observations about the causal structure of IT impact theories still hold true today; neither investigate whether or not their recommendations have inspired IT impact theorists. The present study is a first step toward filling these gaps.
