Introduction
My current research program involves the preparation and study of novel fluorinated analogs of sulfa drugs, 2-acyl-1,3-diketones, indanones, ninhydrin and their heterocyclic products. My undergraduate student researchers undertake reactions they studied in organic chemistry to synthesize new compounds. After characterization, students use spectroscopic methods to study the tautomeric properties of the diketones, and conduct QSAR and bioactivity studies of these new fluorinated products.

To better understand how green chemistry principles may be applied to a simple electrophilic addition reaction, students in the Green and Sustainable Chemistry course (CHEM 4000) at Georgia Gwinnett College were introduced to the bromination of E-stilbene in a scaffolded approach which culminated with the conduct of an experimental comparison of th...
This book (Joseph Sloop, editor) is a reprint of the Special Issue Synthesis of Heteroaromatic Compounds that was published in Molecules.
Chalcones continue to occupy a venerated status as scaffolds for the construction of a variety of heterocyclic molecules with medicinal and industrial properties. Syntheses of hybrid chalcones featuring heteroaromatic components, especially those methods utilizing green chemistry principles, are important additions to the preparative methodologies...

Parasitic resistance and mutations in folate pathway receptors of Plasmodium falciparum have diminished the efficacy of antimalarial agents including sulfadoxine and pyrimethamine. In this study, seven novel fluorinated heterocyclic sulfonamides are modeled to determine their potential to blunt the effects of folate pathway mutations such as those...
Pyrazoles have potential applications in the agrochemical and medicinal chemistry industries as pesticides, anti-inflammatory medications, and antitumor drugs. Malaria is a disease with debilitating health and negative economic impacts in regions at high risk of infection. Parasitic resistance and side effects of current antimalarial drugs are major setbacks to the successful campaigns that have reduced malaria incidence by 40% in the last decade. The parasite's dependence on glycolysis for energy require...
The title chalcone, C18H16O3, was prepared by a solventless base-promoted
Claisen–Schmidt condensation and, upon recrystallization from ethanol,
obtained in 56% yield. The dihedral angle between the indanone ring system
and the benzene ring is 2.54 (4) and the C atoms of the methoxy groups deviate
from the benzene ring by 0.087 (1) and 0.114 (1)...
Trifluoromethylated and ring-fluorinated 4H-chromones have been prepared via cyclodehydration and via the Baker-Venkataraman rearrangement. The cyclodehydration of 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(1-naphthol-2-yl)-1,3-butanedione was performed under a variety of base promoted and acid catalyzed processes enroute to 2-trifluoromethyl--naphthochromone. Using micr...
Research progress in heterocycle synthesis and studies at Georgia Gwinnett College
This conference presentation is about the Green Chemistry Initiatives undertaken at GGC featuring Course-Embedded Undergraduate Research Experiences (CURE) in use by the Chemistry program.
Chemistry faculty in the School of Science and Technology (SST) at Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) have instituted a new two-semester laboratory capstone course sequence as part of the Chemistry major program. These integrated laboratory courses emphasize a multidisciplinary approach that provides a unique undergraduate experience for students.

The ability of fluorine and fluorine-containing groups to alter molecular electronic and bioactive properties relative to non-fluorinated analogs is well understood. For more than three decades, the selective incorporation of fluorine onto organic molecules by electrophilic reagents has been investigated with great intensity. Nevertheless, the eluc...
Malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum continues to be a major world health scourge. The inhibition of enzymes in the folate pathway critical for synthesis of nucleotides and amino acids plays a role in treatment of malaria. The bifunctional enzyme complex, dihydrofolate reductase thymidylate synthase (DHFR-TS) is a folate pathway enzyme target wi...
The Organic Chemistry II laboratory experience is reimagined as a semester-long green synthesis project involving the preparation of sulfa drugs. Student groups select a sulfa drug target to synthesize, research their assigned sulfa drug target, prepare a research plan and brief their instructor on their plan. Once their plan is approved, students...
Heterocyclic molecules incorporating fluorinated isoquinoline components are found in many medicinally and agriculturally important bioactive products as well as industrially impactful materials. Within the past decade, a variety of isoquinolinic ring assembly techniques has enabled the introduction of diverse fluorine-containing functionalities wh...
The parasite Plasmodium falciparum is responsible for the major world scourge malaria , a disease that affects 3.3 billion people worldwide. The development of new drugs is critical because of the diminished effectiveness of current antimalarial agents mainly due to parasitic resistance, side effects and cost. Molecular docking was used to explore...
A problem-solving scaffold approach to synthesis was developed and implemented in two intervention sections of Chemistry 2211K (Organic Chemistry I) at Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC). A third section of Chemistry 2211K at GGC served as the control group for the experiment. Synthesis problems for chapter quizzes and the final examination were design...
This letter notes improvements to the American Journal of Organic Chemistry article submission standards and peer review processes.
The synthesis of the new diethyl ammonium salt of diethylammonium(E)-5-(1,5-bis(4-fluorophenyl)-3-oxopent-4-en-1-yl)-1,3-diethyl-4,6-dioxo-2-thioxohexaydropyrimidin-5-ide 3 via a regioselective Michael addition of N,N-diethylthiobarbituric acid 1 to dienone 2 is described. In 3, the carboanion of the thiobarbituric moiety is stabilized by the stron...
