The present work approaches the chronology of the Iron Age at the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula from the analysis of 457 dates 14C from 76 archaeological sites of the Iron Age. From these, a radiocarbon periodization is established that places the hillforts and other sites of this period on the calendrical scale.

This paper deals with the so-called modular kilns, ceramic structures characteristic of the Bronze and Iron Age periods in various regions of Europe. Despite the interest shown in these material forms in recent years, it is still unclear what their function was exactly. However, the dominant interpretation within archaeological research has tended...

Spatial analysis of materials has been and still being crucial in the study of past societies. Archaeologists have developed appropriate theoretical frameworks for addressing the study of material nature, involving aspects such as their distribution, meaning and mobility at different scales. Among others, the macro-scale analysis has been used to d...

Wood rapidly perishes in archaeological contexts and the vast majority of objects made in this raw material are missing. But, could we recover evidences of wooden recipients through the analysis of ceramics? In Northwest Iberia during Iron Age wares are mostly composed by closed recipients that have been used for storing and cooking. Whilst open re...

The main aim of this project is to incorporate the northwest of Iberia to the current debate in archaeology on mobility and connectivity and to develop a new research line that involve rethinking adopting new approaches on studying material culture and organic matter the development of the local communities and their material culture in connection with the southern of Iberia and the Mediterranean. Thus, our purpose in this respect is to explore: (a) how dynamics of materiality (transfer of technological knowledge, the appropriation and the use of exogenous matter and objects, or other type of material connections) offer insights into mobility and interaction between Mediterranean and local agents in northwestern Iberia; and (b) how factors such as mobility, travel, communication and hybridization impact on local identities, co-creating specific landscapes and lifestyles, especially since sixth century BC. A three-step scheme enables to gain these aims. Firstly to analyze by means of the physical and chemical analysis the origin, relationship and function of material things in the context of the exchange and interaction networks that impacted in the northwest of Iberia. Secondly to systematize by means of a spatial data infrastructure (SDI) the information about organic matter and inorganic material of the archaeological record. And thirdly, on the basis of this information and a renewed conceptual device, to conduct an integrated and comparative analysis that allow us to explore socio-material responses of northwestern communities in the context of their interactions with Mediterranean agents.
