Breast cancer has major public health implications, as it is the most frequent malignant tumor and the leading cause of cancer death in women. Survivors have many needs, including strategies to cope with the associated distress. We explore whether focus groups are useful for nurses to obtain information about the emotional state of breast cancer wo...

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) which is the most common type of dementia is characterized by mental or cognitive disorders. People suffering with this condition find it inherently difficult to communicate and describe symptoms. As a consequence, both detection and treatment of comorbidities associated with Alzheimer's disease are substantiall...

Background With the aim of improving the quality of life of people with Alzheimer’s disease, primarily as regards behavioral and psychological symptoms, we implemented canine-assisted therapy in a group of people with this disease. Methods We conducted a quasi-experimental study, with a simple pre-post case series design. Participants comprised 10 A...

Objective: This work sought to analyze the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and social networks among the university nursing faculty staff in Spain. Methodology: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study using a questionnaire on ICT skills designed to comply with the research objective, which was evaluated by experts...

Using plasma membrane vesicles from human trophoblast, carrier-mediated transport of unconjugated bilirubin (UCBR) has been reported. In the present work, using the in situ perfused rat placenta-maternal liver tandem, the relevance of this pathway in vivo was investigated. After single-pass perfusion of rat placenta through the umbilical artery wit...

Beta-cyclodextrin is a compound that forms inclusion complexes with a variety of molecules, specially bile acids and sterols. This study examines the effects of beta-cyclodextrin on cholesterol and bile acid metabolism in hypercholesterolaemic rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups that received during 7 weeks: control diet, 2% cholester...

Unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) is currently believed to cross the placenta only by passive diffusion. To assess whether carrier-mediated transport might be involved, the uptake of [(3)H]-UCB by basal (bTPM) and apical (aTPM) plasma membrane vesicles from human placental trophoblast at term was investigated. In both types of vesicles, the uptake of [(...

We report problems encountered during preparation of tritium-labeled unconjugated bilirubin ((3)H-UCB) from precursor (3)H-5-aminolevulinic acid ((3)H-ALA) in 2 dogs with external biliary drainage installed into the animals under general anesthesia. Under prolonged sedation, 12.9 or 14.0 mCi of (3)H-ALA was administered intravenously in two divided...

The effect of chronic Fasciola hepatica infection on the metabolism of antipyrine, a marker of microsomal oxidative metabolism, was investigated in male water buffaloes dosed daily with 60 F. hepatica metacercariae over 20 days. The plasma elimination half-life of antipyrine was significantly elevated by 23% at 11 weeks postinfection (p.i.) but did...
Article
Physical conditioning has been reported to increase liver oxidative metabolism determined by antipyrine clearance. The purpose of this investigation was to study effects of aerobic conditioning on the different metabolic pathways of antipyrine by comparing the production clearances of antipyrine metabolites. Participant: volunteers not engaged in t...

Unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) is currently believed to cross the placenta only by passive diffusion. To assess whether carrier-mediated transport might be involved, the uptake of [ 3 H]-UCB by basal (bTPM) and apical (aTPM) plasma membrane vesicles from human placental trophoblast at term was investigated. In both types of vesicles, the uptake of [...

The effect of chronic Fasciola hepatica infection on the activity of plasma aspartate aminotransferase (AST), glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH) and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) was investigated in water buffaloes dosed daily with 60 F. hepatica metacercariae over 20 days. Experimental fluke infection caused no clinical signs but provoked an inc...

The transport of highly purified 3H-labelled unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) was investigated in rat liver plasma membrane vesicles enriched in the canalicular domain and found to be stimulated (more than 5-fold) by the addition of ATP. Other nucleotides, such as AMP, ADP, GTP and a non-hydrolysable ATP analogue (adenosine 5'-[alpha, beta-methylene] t...

The effects of physical conditioning on antipyrine clearance were studied in two groups of subjects. Healthy men not engaged in the systematic practice of any sport were compared with endurance runners (defined as men running > 80 km/week). Studies were carried out at three different periods of the annual plan training at 4-month intervals. Antipyr...

This study was designed to investigate the effects of pectin on cholesterol and bile acid metabolism and to elucidate the mechanisms involved in its hypolipidemic effect in rats. The key regulatory enzymes in cholesterol and bile acid metabolism, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMG-CoA reductase) and cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase, were d...

Using highly purified unconjugated [3H]bilirubin (UCB), we measured UCB binding to delipidated human serum albumin (HSA) and its uptake by basolateral rat liver plasma membrane vesicles, in both the absence and presence of an inside-positive membrane potential. Free UCB concentrations ([Bf]) were calculated from UCB-HSA affinity constants (K'f), de...

The behaviour of tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) and t-PA inhibitor (PAI) was studied in patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis. t-PA antigen showed a 3-fold significant increase with respect to healthy volunteers. t-PA activity in these patients did not significantly differ from that found in the controls, but the specific activity of t-P...

Cholesterol is an essential component of all tissues, as it is a part of the structure of cell membranes, and it is an immediate precursor of a series of essential substances such as vitamins, steroid hormones, and bile acids. Under physiologic conditions, the intake and output of cholesterol in the organism is coordinated and balanced with the aim...
