I studied Social Sciences at UFAM between 2006 and 2012. During my undergraduate studies, I undertook mobility periods at the University of Porto, Portugal, as an Erasmus Mundus scholarship holder (2009-2010) and at UFRN, in 2011, through a Brazilian Mobility Programme. With the support of the Swedish Institute Scholarships, I became a Masters student at Lund University. In 2022, I completed a sociology PhD at Charles University in Prague. I am José. I was born in Manaus, and because of a hospital infection, I acquired septic arthritis in my right knee, which left me with one leg 10cm shorter than the other. Growing up with my mother as the only provider, I faced multiple surgeries before I even turned 18. I decided to 'quit' my medical treatments and study social sciences in Manaus....

Between 2017 and 2020, I embarked on a fieldwork journey that led me to follow Brazilian migrant futsal and football players in Central and Eastern Europe. As my fieldwork developed, I gradually understood that futsal and football could be thought as two interrelated sports. At that time, I set myself to understand how Brazilian migrant football an...

Does apartheid South Africa point to an emerging paradigm in international relations? Catherine Besteman dares us to raise this provocative question in her book Militarized Global Apartheid. While the question may seem counterintuitive because apartheid was considered a “crime against humanity” by the United Nations General Assembly in 1966, Bestem...

The year 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of a landmark book in sports migration studies, The Global Sports Arena: Athletic Talent in an Interdependent World, edited by John Bale and Joseph Maguire. Bale and Maguire established sports migration as a subfield of sports studies, first, by focusing on professional athletes as workers; second, by refram...

“Dreams” and “sacrifices” commonly figure in the symbolic worlds of anonymous Brazilian migrant athletes. In mobilising these symbols, migrant Brazilian players reveal the contexts in which contemporary sports migration movements occur. When asked to think about their career trajectories, anonymous sports migrants frame their “dreams” vis-à-vis the...

This book takes a close look at the experiences of migrant athletes, their precarious careers, and at what this can tell us about wider themes of globalisation, identity, race, gender, and the body. Based on in-depth ethnographic research on male Brazilian footballers and futsal players working in Central and Eastern Europe, this book helps to fi...

Rationale The book is about Brazilian football and futsal migration, and examines issues involved in athletes' migration routes, including religiosities, gender and relationships with injuries and pain. The book has a novel focus on athletes that have worked in Central and Eastern European leagues. The main argument is that Brazilian football and f...

This thesis is a multi-sited ethnography on Brazilian futsal and football migrants in Israel, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Lebanon, and...

The relationship between sports, especially football, Brazilian national identity, and ‘race’, has received considerable attention. The hyper-visibility of football, however, obscures the relationship between Brazilian identity with another sport that was partially ‘invented’ in Brazil: futsal. This paper examines migrant Brazilian football and fut...

Brazilians comprise a “global football workforce” (Poli, Ravenel and Besson 2019) as the largest national group of migrant players in contemporary football. Previous ethnographic studies (Rial 2008, 2012) reveal that Brazilian athletes value the opportunity to move across borders. In constructing mobile aspirations, athletes from the Global South a...

This article analyses Ruth Landes’ contributions to social anthropology based on a series of feminist, queer and postcolonial insights. Landes’ academic trajectory and her biography are used to understand her unique form of writing ethnographies. I try to show that “The City of Women” (originally published in 1947) does not follow classic anthropol...
