Introduction
My research interests are focused on how anthropogenic stressors affect microbial communities and to what extent such stressors contribute to the acquisition and spread of antibiotic resistance in environmental settings. During the last few years, my research interests have been broadened to include the contribution of bacteriophages to bacterial evolution and ecology.

Article
Although antibiotic resistance has become a major threat to human health worldwide, this phenomenon has been largely overlooked in studies in environmental settings. Aquatic environments may provide an ideal setting for the acquisition and dissemination of antibiotic resistance, because they are frequently impacted by anthropogenic activities. This...
Article
Although antibiotic resistance represents a significant and growing public health concern, the contribution of bacteriophages (phages) to the mobilization of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment has not been extensively studied. Recent studies, however, suggest that phages play an important role in the acquisition, maintenance, and...

Viruses significantly influence local and global biogeochemical cycles and help bacteria to survive in different environments by encoding various auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs) associated with energy acquisition, stress tolerance and degradation of xenobiotics. Here we studied whether bacterial (dsDNA) virus encoded AMGs are enriched in organochl...

A growing number of recent studies suggest that the contribution of phages to antibiotic resistance should not be underestimated. Here we describe their implications for public and environmental health, with a special emphasis on the mechanisms underlying phage-mediated horizontal gene transfer.
Article
Antibiotic resistance has become a major health concern; thus, there is a growing interest in exploring the occurrence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment as well as the factors that contribute to their emergence. Aquatic ecosystems provide an ideal setting for the acquisition and spread of ARGs due to the continuous pollution...
