This collection of thirteen essays examines sociolinguistic phenomena in a wide variety of marginal environments, providing both an overview of globalizaiton on the margins and a foundation for an expanded understanding of the processes of linguistic and cultural changes at work in these settings. Taking an expansive conceptual view of margins, the...
The concept of chronotopicity is increasingly used in sociolinguistic theorizing as a new way of looking at context and scale in studies of language, culture and identity. This volume brings together empirical work that puts flesh on the bones of this rather abstract chronotopical theorizing, especially focusing on the discursive construction of ch...
In this paper, we report on a study of gender reference in Limburgian, specifically the use of the neuter subject pronoun het ‘she’ (lit. ‘it’) to refer to a female referent. This pronoun is used in addition to the feminine pronoun ze ‘she’. We investigate the role of the referent’s social and grammatical characteristics in the variation between gr...

Brabants Heem
This edited Volume entitled Language policies and the politics of language practices consists of contributions stemming from the field of ethnography of education, minority language teaching and language politics more in general. Starting from past contributions hunched in a more Fishmanian ‘sociolinguistics of spread’ where the driving question ha...
In the domains of education and labor, we may expect to be assessed on competences and capacities. Alas, stereotyping and prejudice hinder this for people from peripheral areas and marginalized groups. One of the important factors in this is their language. Why does speaking with an accent diminish one’s opportunities in the job market or the achie...

In deze bijdrage ga ik opnieuw na hoe we de dialecten van Budel, Maarheeze en Soerendonk (de Kranendonkse dialecten) zouden moeten noemen: zijn zij Brabants of Limburgs? De drie dorpen behoren al vele eeuwen tot het hertogdom Brabant en zijn opvolgende staatkundige eenheden Staats Brabant en Noord-Brabant, maar de dialectologie laat zien dat er Lim...
The present paper discusses gender marking, i.e. the morphological marking of masculine, feminine and neuter lexical gender in the adnominal domain, in Brabantish dialects spoken in the southern Dutch province North-Brabant. Gender markers belong to the most salient features of North-Brabantish, but with a process of dialect levelling well on its w...
Writing is a medium for communication that has been in use for thousands of years. Writing systems have developed in different ways in various cultures and societies. For a long time, written language was perceived as setting the standards for proper language. Recently, digital communication has changed writing enormously, as it has given writing a...
Dialect and standard language in contact. The many forms of the Langstraat dialect
Over the past century, the dialects of the Langstraat region in the province of Noord-Brabant have structurally changed under the influence of the Dutch standard language. The younger dialect varieties that have emerged, have lost characteristic features through time...
It is remarkable that first language acquisition and historical dialectology should have remained strange bedfellows for so long considering the common assumption in historical linguistics that language change is due to the process of non-target transmission of linguistic features, forms and structures between generations, and thus between parents...
Eén van de bekendste digitale sociale netwerken is Facebook. Kenmerkend voor zo'n netwerk is dat er enorm veel wordt gecommuniceerd in woord en beeld. De nieuwe mogelijkheden om te communiceren die dergelijke netwerken bieden, hebben onze samenleving complexer gemaakt dan ooit. Zij vormen elementen van globalisering die een veranderlijkheid...

As globalization has brought about social changes not seen previously, this squib sketches outlines for a renewal of the field of dialectology. The primary concern is how these changes are reflected in young people’s identity construction and expression, expecting an intricate
interplay between the attractions of global and local culture. This may...
Super-diversity' has gained popularity in the field of sociolinguistics as a new concept that jettisons the rather rigid toolkit of speech communities, ethnolects and mother tongues in favour of notions of truncated repertoires and resources that better capture the plurality of styles, registers and genres of people living in a globalized world. In...
This paper aims at mapping out and analyzing language variation and the un-derlying social structures of adolescents in a part of the province North Brabant, The Netherlands. It presents the findings of a study that was conducted in 2010 at two Dutch high schools, in a large college in the town of Uden and in a much smaller school in the peripheral...
Moving from a traditional dialect geography research methodology to one in which data are processed electronically, and where
visualization is used as a research tool, can be of great benefit to dialect geography. A working environment offering full
support for using visualization as a research tool could take dialect geography into the era of e-Sc...
It is remarkable that first language acquisition and historical dialectology remain strange bedfellows although in historical linguistics there is the common assumption that language change in the past is due to the process of non target like transmission of linguistic features between generations i.e. between parents and children.
