To effectively plan and manage the use of agricultural land, it is crucial to identify and evaluate the multiple human and environmental factors that influence it. In this study, we propose a model framework to identify the factors potentially explaining the use of agricultural land for wheat, maize, and olive grove plantations at the regional leve...

The first case of COVID-19 in continental Portugal was documented on the 2nd of March 2020 and about seven months later more than 75 thousand infections had been reported. Although several factors correlate significantly with the spatial incidence of COVID-19 worldwide, the drivers of spatial incidence of this virus remain poorly known and need fur...

Mosquito-borne infections are increasing in endemic areas and previously unaffected regions. In 2020, the notification rate for Dengue was 0.5 cases per 100,000 population, and for Chikungunya <0.1/100,000. In 2019, the rate for Malaria was 1.3/100,000, and for West Nile Virus, 0.1/100,000. Spatial analysis is increasingly used in surveillance and...

Commuting flows and long-distance travel are important spreading factors of viruses and particularly airborne ones. Therefore, it is relevant to examine the association among diverse mobility scenarios and the spatial dissemination of SARS-CoV-2 cases. We intended to analyze the patterns of virus spreading linked to different mobility scenarios, in...

This study addresses the methodological gap in tourism research regarding the long-term monitoring of tourism activities in urban settings. We propose an analytical framework that uses data from location-based social networks (LBSN) to derive tourists’ digital footprints resulting in a sustained, yet partial, overview of tourist activity and mobili...

Social vulnerability, as one of the risk components, partially explains the magnitude of the impacts observed after a disaster. In this study, a spatiotemporally comparable assessment of social vulnerability and its drivers was conducted in Portugal, at the civil parish level, for three census frames. The first challenging step consisted of the sel...

The Aedes aegypti mosquito is the main vector for several diseases of global importance, such as dengue and yellow fever. This species was first identified on Madeira Island in 2005, and between 2012 and 2013 was responsible for an outbreak of dengue that affected several thousand people. However, the potential distribution of the species on the is...

Integrating solar photovoltaics in electric vehicles can reduce operating costs and extend the driving range. It is particularly appropriate for urban mobility due to the relatively short typical daily travels of urban vehicles. However, shadowing cast by buildings will reduce the solar irradiation falling on the vehicle, reducing its PV generation...
