This study aimed to investigate the influence of genetic variants in neuroplasticity-related genes on antidepressant treatment phenotypes. The BDNF-TrkB signaling pathway, as well as the downstream kinases Akt and ERK and the mTOR pathway, have been implicated in depression and neuroplasticity. However, clinicians still struggle with the unpredicta...
Background
Only a small number of consistent processes predict which depressed patients will achieve remission with antidepressant medication. One set of processes is that of social ranking strategies/variables that are related to life events and severe difficulties. Particularly, defeat and entrapment predict poorer response to antidepressants. Ho...
The aim of the present study is to gain additional information about the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI), psychological inflexibility (PI), emotion regulation (ER), and mindfulness. The sample was composed of 331 patients with anxiety and/or depression, treated in a private clinic. Participants completed the Acceptance and Action Q...
Psychotherapy is the most prevalent ambulatory treatment for mental disorders. However, many patients who initiate a psychothera-peutic intervention do not receive the treatment in an "appropriate dosage", so the probability of obtaining the desired symptomatic relief is reduced. This study aims to understand which sociodemographic variables (age,...
Highlights

Background:
Major depressive disorder is a condition associated with dysregulated cytokine levels; among these, IL6. Furthermore, genetic variations within cytokine genes have been proposed to predict antidepressant treatment outcome.
Objectives:
This study aims to evaluate the role of IL6-174G > C and IL6R D358A A > C functional polymorphisms i...
Recent studies suggest that immune activation and cytokines, such as IL-18, are involved in depression. IL-18 is expressed in brain and is increased in patients with moderate to severe depression. In this study we aim to evaluate the role of IL18-607C>A and IL18-137G>C promoter polymorphisms in antidepressant treatment phenotypes, specifically rela...
Background:
Hippocampal neurogenesis has been suggested as a downstream event of antidepressants (AD) mechanism of action and might explain the lag time between AD administration and the therapeutic effect. Despite the widespread use of AD in the context of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) there are no reliable biomarkers of treatment response phen...
Introduction
Recent studies suggested that immune activation and cytokines might be involved in depression. The proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-18 (IL-18) is less reported in depression but is still relevant since it is expressed in the brain and serum levels of IL-18 have been found to be increased in patients with moderate to severe depressi...
Treatment-resistant major depressive disorder (TR-MDD) is a complex condition, with very low remission rates. In recent years some studies have been conducted on the implementation of cognitive behavioral therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy interventions via the Internet to MDD patients, and results have been promising. However, there have been...
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a highly prevalent disorder, which has been associated with an abnormal response of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Reports have argued that an abnormal HPA axis response can be due to an altered P-Glycoprotein (P-GP) function. This argument suggests that genetic polymorphisms in ABCB1 may have an e...
The social rank and arrested defenses model for mood disorders bridges between animal and human models of psychopathology. There is increasing evidence that depression is associated with subordinated and loss of social rank, feeling inferior, shame, submissive behavior, and feeling defeated. These stressful states activate threat coping responses o...
This paper briefly describes what is the third generation of cognitive-behavioral therapies, focusing on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), its underlying models and effectiveness, especially when combined with mindfulness techniques. This therapy, in anxiety disorders, focuses on the reduction of the function of anxiety concerning behavioral...
Although there are several reports on the benefits of exercise on Major DepressiveDisorder, none has monitored these exercise programs with accelerometers. We haveconducted a 12 week home based moderate intensity exercise program in 33 treatmentresistantMajor Depressive Disorder patients and, based on accelerometer data, determined compliance, exerc...
Although several international guidelines recommend exercise to reduce symptomsof Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), data concerning the long-term effects of exercisein depression are still extremely scarce. Therefore, and in order to assess these long-termeffects, we have evaluated treatment-resistant MDD patients previously enrolled in amoderate in...
Physical exercise has shown promising results as an adjuvant therapy for depression. However, most studies rely on self-reported measures, which are subject to bias.AimsTo assess, using accelerometer data, compliance to a moderate intensity 12 week exercise program, exercise patterns and relationship between exercise dose and response to treatment,...
Physical exercise has shown promising results as an adjuvant therapy for depression. However, follow-up information assessing its long-term effects after the exercise program is suspended, is scarce.AimsTo assess depression and functional parameters at follow-up, 6 months after a population sample of patients with treatment-resistant Major Depressi...
Some studies have suggested that the current global financial and economic crisis is having a negative impact in the population mental health. However, data on previously remitted Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) patients is not available.AimsTo assess depression status in a population sample of remitted MDD patients after the onset of the current g...
Depression is the most common mental disorder, affecting a large population worldwide. Of the psychiatric syndromes which present mood disorders, major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most severe due to the long periods of depressed mood, somatic symptoms, cognitive disturbances, clinically significant distress and impairment in everyday fu...
Aim: To assess the impact of a moderate physical exercise programme on the Quality of Life (QoL) of patients with treatment-resistant Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and evaluate the relationship between QoL and response to treatment.
Conclusions: Our results suggest that physical exercise can be used as an effective therapy, adjuvant to pharmacolo...
