Rural poverty in Paraguay led to the implementation of the ‘Sembrando Oportunidades Familia por Familia’ program (SOF), an initiative based on the graduation approach and one of the few government-run implementations of this kind of program. We evaluate the intervention outcomes in poverty. There are positive changes in the participants’ income, pr...
Transformando Mi Futuro (Transforming my Future) is a poverty reduction program implemented by the Colombian government as part of the strategy to support and repair the victims of the armed conflict. The program is based on the graduation approach that implies a comprehensive intervention in which the household receives consumption support, financ...
Coastal communities depending on small-scale fisheries (SSFs) are poorly understood. Designing policies to address their vulnerabilities requires understanding the socioeconomic context in which SSFs operate. Unfortunately, that information is usually incomplete in developing countries. This study seeks to close this gap by examining the socio-demo...
In developing countries, artisanal fishing communities typically exhibit high poverty and vulnerability levels and a marked dependence on fishing resources for their subsistence. Nevertheless, there does not exist sufficient information about these relationships and their dynamics. This study contributes to (i) understanding artisanal fisheries’ li...
As part of the Colombian government’s strategy to support the armed-conflict victims, a Graduation Program called “Transformando Mi Futuro” (Transforming my future) was implemented. Unlike other graduation programs, this one targets the urban population and has
no assets transfers. To evaluate this program, a Results Evaluation (Before/After) appro...
The sustainable use of natural resources depends on formal and informal institutions, where gender composition might play a role. Several studies have shown the effects of having men and women working together in environmental protection and conservation management. Nevertheless, there is little evidence regarding the impact of groups' gender compo...
Payment for environmental services (PES) is an economic instrument designed to promote the conservation of ecosystems and the provision of their services. For almost two decades, the concept, design, and implementation of this tool have evolved and provided lessons on aspects that should be considered for its successful performance. This document r...
Cooperation is thought to be a necessary condition to solve collective action dilemmas such as climate change or the sustainable use of common pool resources. Yet, it is poorly understood how situations pervaded by thresholds shape the behaviour of people facing collective dilemmas. Here we provide empirical evidence that resource users facing thre...

En esta nota, utilizamos los fundamentos de la economía de los recursos naturales renovables-como las pesquerías-para analizar el avance de la pandemia, comprender el balan...
Coastal population is among the most vulnerable to disasters triggered by natural hazards. Recent recognition of the role of coastal and marine ecosystems for reducing
vulnerability in coastal communities has led to incorporate direct investments in these
ecosystems. However, there is a lack of knowledge and understanding of their economic

As part of the comprehensive reparation contemplated in the Victims' Law, the Land Restitution Unit has created the Productive Projects Program (PPP) to guarantee that the return of the victims of the conflict in Colombia is sustainable by providing technical and financial support to the families whose land has been restituted. We developed a quali...
Coastal zones are among the most economically productive areas of the world. However, they are also among the most vulnerable regions to disasters triggered by natural hazards. Recent recognition of the role of healthy coastal and marine ecosystems for reducing vulnerability in coastal communities has led to the design of coastal management strateg...
Marine protected areas are currently recognized as an alternative for the conservation of marine ecosystems. Although the protection reduces the area available for fishing, it has been argued that the spillover effect can increase resources in the adjoining areas. The purpose of this study is to calculate the value of the provision of fishing resou...

Abstract
Economic Experimental Games have shown that individuals make decisions that deviate down from the suboptimal Nash equilibrium. However, few studies have analyzed the case when deviation is above the Nash equilibrium. Extracting from above the Nash equilibrium is inefficient not only socially but also privately and it would exacerbate the t...

Deep-seacorals, also called cold-water corals, provide a variety of ecosystem services, including habitat for numerous species and being a source of biodiversity. Despite their importance, these ecosystems are under threat because of trawling and exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons. According to the gap analysis conducted by the Institute...
Many indigenous communities living in the Amazon rely on hunting and fishing to meet the majority of their protein needs. Despite the importance of these practices, few studies from the region have analyzed the socioeconomic drivers of hunting and fishing at the household level. We propose a household production model to assess the effect of key ec...

Mangroves are one of the world’s most productive ecosystems, providing habitat for an enormous diversity of species. They also contribute to the wellbeing of thousands of people whose way of life depends on mangrove goods and services. Despite this importance, Ecuador has lost between a quarter and a third of its
mangroves (45-75 thousand hectares)...
Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) manages the country's 16 national parks using revenues from conservation fees and other charges for park usage. Effective conservation and, in turn, the quality of Tanzania's tourism products therefore depend on setting fees appropriately. This means balancing potential for increased per visitor revenues with any de...
Marine protected areas are aimed to protect and conserve key ecosystems for the provision of a number of ecosystem services that are the basis for numerous economic activities. Among the several services that these areas provide, the capacity of sequestering (capturing and storing) organic carbon is a regulating service, provided mainly by mangrove...
