Introduction
I am interested in various environmental systems, their geochemical characteristics, and their interaction with each other. Currently I am working on groundwater quality and its potential salinization due to seawater intrusion in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. The confined, multi-layer aquifer system is complex, and many factors determine the groundwater composition, e.g., salinization and freshening processes, redox reactions, dissolution of minerals as well as anthropogenic influences.

The Vietnamese Mekong Delta including Ca Mau province (CMP) is seriously affected by land subsidence. Groundwater over-extraction is considered to be a major driver for this process. To address the reduction of groundwater (GW) extraction as a potential counter measure for further subsidence, this study focuses on understanding the importance of GW...

Aerosol pollution in urban areas is highly variable due to numerous single emission sources such as automobiles, industrial and commercial activities as well as domestic heating, but also due to complex building structures redirecting air mass flows, producing leeward and windward turbulences and resuspension effects. In this publication, it is sho...

The optical properties, chemical composition, and potential chromophores of brown carbon (BrC) aerosol particles were studied during typical summertime and wintertime at a kerbside in downtown Karlsruhe, a city in central Europe. The average absorption coefficient and mass absorption efficiency at 365 nm (Abs365 and MAE365) of methanol-soluble BrC...

Accurate monitoring and assessment of the environmental state, as a prerequisite for improved action, is valuable and necessary because of the growing number of environmental problems that have harmful effects on natural systems and human society. This study developed an integrated novel framework containing three modules remote sensing technology...

The optical properties, chemical composition, and potential chromophores of brown carbon (BrC) aerosol particles were studied during typical summer and winter time at a kerbside in downtown Karlsruhe, a city in central Europe. The average absorption coefficient and mass absorption efficiency at 365 nm (Abs365 and MAE365) of BrC were lower in the su...

In order to assess the factors controlling urban air pollution, we characterized fine particulate matter (PM2.5) at an urban street canyon in southwest Germany, in summer 2019 and winter 2020. The average mass concentration of PM2.5 was higher in dry and hot summer (7.0 ± 3.5 μg m⁻³) than in cold and humid winter (5.8 ± 2.8 μg m⁻³) with frequent we...

The Ca Mau peninsula (CMP) is a key economic region in southern Vietnam. In recent decades, the high demand for water has increased the exploitation of groundwater, thus lowering the groundwater level and leading to risks of degradation, depletion, and land subsidence, as well as salinity intrusion in the groundwater of the whole Mekong Delta regio...

Study region: Ca Mau Province (CMP), Mekong Delta (MD), Vietnam. Study focus: Groundwater from deep aquifers is the most reliable source of freshwater in the MD but extensive overexploitation in the last decades led to the drop of hydraulic heads and negative environmental impacts. Therefore, a comprehensive groundwater investigation was conducted...

Numerous diffuse sources contribute in addition to industrial plants to atmospheric particulate matter (PM) concentrations causing concern regarding potential health effects and environmental impacts. Routine monitoring focuses on PM mass and determination of the total concentrations for selected elements. However, assessment of the (eco-)toxicolog...

Elevated arsenic (As) concentration and salinity (TDS > 1000 mg/L) seriously affect the groundwater quality in the Hetao Basin, China, however, the origin of groundwater salinity and its influence for As mobilization has not been widely studied. In this study, the influence of evaporite minerals weathering on groundwater salinity and As mobilizatio...
