Introduction
My research is interdisciplinary and treads the borderlands between philosophy and empirical historical research. In brief, my research profile rests on two connected foundations: i) Philosophy of history. In this field, my research focuses on historical explanation and understanding, the methodological distinctiveness of history, evidence and testimony; ii) Empirical research in the history of ideas about the interplay between language, class and identity during the 20th century.

This article offers a reassessment of the main import of Peter Winch’s philosophy of the social sciences. Critics argue that Winch presented a flawed methodology for the social sciences, while his supporters deny that Winch’s work is about methodology at all. Contrary to both, the author argues that Winch deals with fundamental questions about meth...

Ever since the narrativist turn in the philosophy of history, the view that the past must be re-written anew from the perspective of each generation of historians has become commonplace: Descriptions of the past change as the arrow of time moves forward, and since there is no such thing as a God’s eye view of the past there is no such thing as one...

This paper examines narrativism's claim that the historical past cannot be known once and for all because it must be continuously re-described from the standpoint of the present. We argue that this claim is based on a non sequitur. We take narrativism's claim that the past must be re-described continuously from the perspective of the present to be...

How does history relate to the past? According to leading historical theorists, the relation to the past in history is reducible to evidential, psychological, practical and retrospective concerns. In contrast, this volume claims that historical relations to the past are irreducible products of the logical commitments of history as method. Ahlskog a...

In this chapter, Jonas Ahlskog examines R. G. Collingwood’s conception of the philosophy of history and its metaphilosophical import. Ahlskog shows that Collingwood’s philosophy of history is simultaneously both a descriptive metaphysics of history and an elucidation of the relation between historical and philosophical thought. As a descriptive met...

The essay examines the recent discussion about a “crisis of testimony” in historiography. Central to this discussion is the question of how it is possible for human testimony to convey information about the limit experiences of 20th century history. Given that the credibility of testimony is assessed by appealing to our previous understanding of wh...

It has recently been argued that the philosophical study of professional history constitutes a subfield of epistemology. Consequently, the philosophy of history is cast as only one particular species of the general study of the relationship between evidence and theory in scientific practice. This view is based upon an absolute separation between su...

This essay examines recent theories about the presence of the past from the perspective of Collingwood's philosophy of history. In the work of Eelco Runia and Frank Ankersmit among others, elaborate theories are offered for explaining how the past conditions and moves the present. Collingwood addresses the same kind of issues in his philosophy of h...

The concept of evidence is a cornerstone for the modern idea of history. As the story goes, pre-modern history was based on testimony from authorities in the past – modern history is, in contrast, based on treating material from the past strictly as evidence. Through this transformation history became a science of inference from evidence in the pre...

Michael Oakeshott’s distinction between the practical and the historical past has been the focus of much discussion in contemporary theory of history. This is primarily due to Hayden White’s appeal to Oakeshott’s distinction in several recent works. However, the philosophical underpinnings of Oakeshott’s distinction are seldom discussed. This essay...

We will look critically at three essays by Cora Diamond concerning Peter Winch's views on the possibility of communication and criticism between language-games. We briefly present our understanding of Winch's approach to philosophy. Then, we argue that Diamond misidentifies Winch's views, taking them to imply language-game relativism or linguistic...

Project
