Although structural functionalism finds its roots much earlier than systems theory, as researchers use it today, it is based on systems theory. This book chapter sets forth an approach for using systems theory and structural functionalism as frameworks and models for research.
Societal security considers all threats, both internal and external, human made and environmental, that affect the nation as a whole as well as the individual citizen. This project uses a systems framework to identify and study the impact of threats on a small country. Kosovo is used as a case study because of its strategic importance and the nature of its external and internal threats.
